GREY KINGSTON

"hey, carl?" i walk towards him, taking a seat next to him on the concrete. he's playing with plastic solo cups, tossing them up into the rusted basketball hoop.

"yeah?"

"can you fill me in on the governor?"

he stops messing with the cup and looks at me under the brim of his dad's sheriff hat.

"it's kind of a long story."

"i need to know. daryl told me to let him or your dad know if i ever see the governor ... and i don't know what he's done to y'all."

carl lets out a sigh, "he runs a town called woodbury. merle lived there for a bit, daryl's brother. he took maggie and glenn one day, just because he's an asshole really and—"

i furrow my eyebrows as i listen. i didn't know daryl had a brother.

"merle's an asshole?" i interrupt.

"well, yeah, he's a dixon."

i nod my head, i should've known.

"anyway, merle wanted to see daryl but maggie and glenn refused to bring him here ... for good reason too."

"michonne saw everything and came here to let us know, that's how we met her. we had to go get maggie and glenn back, and when i say we, i mean my dad and everyone else." he rolls his eyes. "the governor was 'boutta execute them. merle stayed with us for a bit, but the governor gave my dad an ultimatum. said he won't attack if we hand over michonne. so merle took matters into his own hands and took michonne. guess he had a change of heart though because he ended up lettin' her go and tryna kill the governor for us."

i place my chin in my hands, watching carl crush one of the cups.

"but he got bit. daryl found him as a walker."

my mouth falls agape. i feel so terrible for daryl, that must've been heart wrenching to see.

"the governor's attack plan failed. i guess he ended up killing his own people or somethin'. we haven't seen him around since, but we gotta stay alert." he looks at me. "we don't know if he'll ever come back, but if he does ... it's probably gonna be a war."

"jesus christ." i mumble, thinking over everything i just learned.

"so it's good daryl told ya to look out for him. because that'll be bad if you ever see him 'round here."

i watch as he tosses another plastic cup up towards the basketball hoop, but the wind pushes it directly back to us. the sky is a dark grey, it looks almost black in the near distance.
