GREY KINGSTON

the door squeaks as i push it open, catching sasha's curious eyes.

"hey." she smiles, a sigh of relief huffing out of her lungs.

"hey." i step into the large, empty room she has all to herself. "it's good to see your face." i hug her carefully, making sure not to squeeze too tight or bump the bandage on her right shoulder.

"i'm glad to see you alive. i really wasn't sure once i lost sight of you in that herd."

"yeah, i could say the same to you." i take a seat on the edge of the bed. our teasing ends and our smiles slowly fade. "what was it like out there with them?"

"terrifying. i thought they were going to kill me right then and there, but they threw a mask over my head and dragged me along. i kept thinking of my brother the whole time, how he'd probably try to reason with them to let him go, say there's something they could come up with—a plan of some sort. tyreese was good at that. i just wanted to kill them."

"we have the leader's daughter back at alexandria."

sasha's expression drops.

"henry found her, brought her back with him."

"fuckin' whisperers." she grunts, removing the blanket from her legs.

"what do you need? i'll get it for you." i stop her from getting up.

"i was gonna go see the others, tell them it's stupid to let her stay with y'all. this is gonna start another war, you know it is, grey."

i nod, "if it does, at least we know we're doing it for the right thing."

she scoffs, "are we?"

"i'll get them for you." i offer, standing up. "they're in the room over visiting andrea. i wanted to see you first."

"your dad's here, you know?"

"yeah, i'm tryin' to forget about that." i smile. "wait here, i'll bring 'em in."

i leave her room, stepping out into the quiet hallway where rosita stands in the doorframe of the room over.

"hey," she turns. "sasha awake?"

"yeah. how's it going in there?" i question, peaking through the cracked door where i catch a glimpse of rick's back and hear a soft voice belonging to siddiq.

"she's still asleep, but i guess she's okay. siddiq had to amputate just above the wrist, there was almost nothing left to save. elijah isn't in there." she practically reads my thoughts. "he's down the hall in that room right there. siddiq said he didn't take it well, hearing she needed surgery. he hasn't come out since last night."
