Mirage x Reader pt.2

The scorching desert sun beamed down on the Egyptian diggers, digging into the barren desert sand, miles from civilization. As noon approached they worked harder, wanting to finish before the deadly heat reached its zenith.

Not too far from the dig site was a large beige tent. Inside you were alone, sitting in front of a large folding table. On the table was a heap of old Egyptian manuscripts and stone artifacts scattered around the table. To anyone outside it looked like chaos but to you it was progress.

You scratched your white beard as you scanned an old papyrus field with damaged hieroglyphs. It was half burnt but just enough survived for you to understand the ancient language. You wiped your wrinkled brow of sweat as the sun's heat rose, indicating soon that the workers will have their afternoon break.

You put the old paper down as you took your glasses off. You rubbed your tired old eyes, you began to wonder how long you could hold out, both physically and financially.

"Dr. L/N! We found something," called out a young dark skinned man, running into the tent.

You turned slowly, your bones aching as you did. You knew not to be too excited, this isn't your first rodeo.

"Arlo, what did I say about disrupting me during my reading time," you asked, putting your glasses back on.

"Sorry Doctor but the dig team hit something, something big," he said excitedly.

"Okay, I'll be there in a minute," you waved him off.

The young boy left the tent as you grabbed your golden cat head cane and slowly stood up. You wonder how many years you had before you ended up as dead as the things you drugged up in your long life.

Soon you walked out of your tent, covering your eyes from the harsh sun. You saw your young protege standing at the edge of a dugout that went several feet down. As you approached you began to see deeper and deeper into the dig site. Soon an old sandstone structure emerged from the center of the pit. It wasn't much, just a flat stone that just popped out of the sand that looked like the top of something, you don't know what.

With the help of your protege you slowly walked into the pit and approached the sandstone block. You scanned the stone for anything that could tell you what this was but from experience you still had more digging to do before finding out its purpose. Now standing in front of the stone you gently got to your knees to get a closer expansion of it. A random person from the dig site ran to your side, giving you a hand shove and a brush. Despite noon approaching you begin digging.

Luckily you don't need to dig for long as a symbol soon emerged from the rough sand. It was worn and looked to be scratched off a long time ago. Your heart began to race, but you tampered your emotions, again, this wasn't your first rodeo.

You traced the worn image with your fingers, trying to find out what name it spelled out. After going over the symbol several times over your heartbeat quickened, was this finally it?

"Doctor, what is it," asked you protege, leaning in from behind you.

You didn't answer right away, you're still trying to convince myself that this was not a dream.

"Its… its the symbol of the forsaken goddess, the rejected daughter of Bastet," you said softly, barely not believing it yourself.

Your young protege began to jump for joy as you stoon silently at the worn down symbol. Your heart nearly stopped, and at your age it's probably good it didn't, it's been so long, too long.
