So I already posted this on my message board but nobody ever reads that. I just feel like this is something that's kind of important? Idk. But here's the message copy and pasted, along with additional commentary:
Hi and welcome to my Ted Talk. So, Christianity. I have no problem with you being Christian; in fact, some of the most wonderful, kind and accepting people in my life have identified as Christian. But all of the most negative people in my life have also been Christian. So here's what bothers me: the root of Christianity is supposedly treating everyone with love and kindness, yes? And yet, most Christians I've encountered (MOST, not all) have completely disregarded it. They preach the 'love thy neighbor' message but don't really follow it. They treat others negatively for their race, sexuality/romantic orientation, gender identity/expression, or their religious beliefs. This is what bothers me: Christians who don't follow their own principles. Don't preach acceptance if you're not going to be accepting of ALL people. That's it. That's all I'm saying. Be kind, and be considerate. Because when you tell someone he's going to hell for wanting to kiss someone, or wanting his hair a certain way, you're doing nothing but harm him. When you make fun of people's culture behind their back but claim you're not racist, you're doing nothing but add to the racism. I've just had this on my mind all day and thought I'd share. I don't think I've ever met an unkind person on Wattpad, but these are words geared more towards the people in my life who I'll never have the guts to say this to. I'm just venting pretty much..
Basically, I'm just sick of the hypocrisy of some members of the Christian community. Because that's what it is. When you tell people to 'love all people' then you act really nasty towards certain groups of people despite that? That's hypocritical. Even if you don't agree with someone's beliefs or practices, you should still respect their choices. If they're doing what feels right for them, and what feels authentic to who they are, and they're not harming others, then why do you care what they're doing? How is it your business who someone loves or what 'parts' they have or whether or not they believe in god? Who are you to tell someone who they should and shouldn't be? Who are you to tell someone how their brain should work?
I'm sorry. I doubt anyone here really needs to hear this. If you're on my profile then of course you're not the kind of person this message is for. But I can't address it enough. Religion can be toxic. If you, reader, are religious, good for you! I'm glad you have that kind of faith in your life and get the kind of joy that religion is supposed to bring. But I consider myself agnostic at this point. I believe there's a god, but they don't really care what we do. If they cared so much, why would they let their believers act the way they do? Why wouldn't god 'speak' to them or whatever and tell them they're being cruel? I'm sure religious individuals will have a response here, and that's great! I welcome any conversation you guys wish to have regarding this. But after being told by my own parents that what I want and feel doesn't matter because it'll send me to hell unless I suppress it? That's enough to make me say hell no to their religion and their god. I'm still trying to figure out what I believe. They've made religion into such a toxic thing for me that I just don't want much of anything to do with it. But again I want to make it abundantly clear that I have no qualms with any of you being Christian or believing in god, capital g God. That's your business and I 100% support you in it, and hope you do the same for me when I say I'm not religious.
To the Christians who truly love and accept all people, you are amazing people. Thank you for being you.
