A Drama For Real

Finally, the murderous Monday had arrived. I would have to face reality again, no matter how much I did not want to.
I walked into the staff room with my heart pouncing frantically – I did not know how to face the twins!
I had thought of phoning in sick, but I would have to face them again the next day anyway… Unless I quitted the job. But that would mean I would never get to see them again, and I certainly did not want that to happen, no matter how contradictious it sounded. They simply drove me crazy.
I heaved a sigh of relief as I stepped into the room, because I was not left alone with the twins and Katy was there. I went out later than usual today because I was scared that I would be too early and what if I was the only one in the staff room besides the twins?
But as I made my entrance, the twins snapped their heads up to see who it was and when they saw that it was me, they held my gaze for a couple of seconds before continuing with their work. It was new – they did not keep staring, but those few seconds were embarrassing enough to send me blushing.
I greeted the other teachers, except the twins who were being ignorant at the moment – I just could not get what they were thinking – and sat down at my table.
“Morning Katy,” I smiled at Katy as I put down my bag.
“Hey (Yn),” she returned a bright smile, and startled me the next moment with her question, “How’s your weekend? Was the meet up fun?”
I froze in my position, and I could sense that the twins had their attention on me again. Oh well – what should I say now? I was trying hard not to blush again so as not to give away anything.
“I – err – yeah it was great seeing my friends,” I said after a brief pause – I had decided to go for the vague answer.
“Did you see any hot guys? Anything interesting happened?” Katy grinned cheekily. WHY DID SHE HAVE TO ASK THOSE QUESTIONS? How was I supposed to answer to these?
“Hmm,” I tried to play for more time and pretended to be thoughtful – if I said no, would I offend those blond guys? Probably not I guessed… Katy was referring to someone new and that she did not know, was she not?
“No,” I said eventually, “It’s just the usual.”
“Oh well,” Katy’s face fell, “What a pity!”
We went back to working after Katy told me about her weekend briefly – she visited her parents – and I darted a glance towards the twins.
They were not looking at me, but I swore they were trying to hide their smiles. SO EMBARRASSING.
Just as I thought things could not get worse between me and the Grimes brothers, we came up with the most horrendous plan ever during our big meeting today. It was obviously not my idea, but being the newbie at this school, I did not have much say in the teaching plans. My protest would not be much use, and there were not really any excuses I could use against the plan. It was actually beneficial to the students; it was just that it would worsen the situation between me and those twins.
So here was the thing: as the twins were teaching music and drama, and I was teaching English, in the coming Arts Week at our school, one of the activities would be a drama performance by the students, and in order to prepare for the show, the two Mr. Grimes would have to collaborate with me and teach the students.
And the play was a new version of Snow White – the evil queen was replaced by the cruel king who was supposed to be Snow White’s husband that wanted to catch her. Snow White had escaped from the king’s grasp and ran into the forest, where she met a handsome young hunter. They fell in love but eventually the king found Snow White and he was so mad that he forced her to eat a poisoned apple. They young man then killed the king and saved his love just like how the prince in the original story did.
And to make it worse… The twins had volunteered to demonstrate for the students. With me.
“Why don’t we do a bit of the story for the students and they can have a clearer idea on how the story goes; after all, it’s a brand new story to them even though it was actually a new version of Snow White,” John suggested after exchanging the brief glance with his twin.
“Yeah, they can then write the script and compose the music quicker as they have a better understanding of the play,” Edward added.
“Well, that sounds great,” the principal nodded, “What do you think, Miss (your last name)?” he turned to me.
“Erm,” I was trying hard to come up with a reason to refuse this plan, but there was apparently none, “I think it’d be great.”
The principal smiled, “Good, so it’s all set for the drama part!”
And that was it. I was doomed.
The preparation for the Arts Week would start officially today, and students would not be having normal schedule anymore – this month, before the Arts Week started, the lessons after lunch would be dedicated to the activities of Arts Week. Some students would prepare for the mini concert and some would be dancing and so on, and of course, some would be in my – me and the twins’ – class.
After the meeting, the twins came to me, startling me. All the other teachers had already gone for their lessons, and this was the time when only the twins and I did not have lessons to attend. Why did this have to happen now?
“Miss (your last name),” John came up to me with Edward next to him – since when was I Miss (your last name)? I remembered them calling me by my name at the club—
Okay, I did not want to go there again. I must remember not to bring up this part of my memory. I might as well ask my friends to change our meet up place next time.
“Yes?” I answered nervously, as they were both standing in front of me, closer than necessary. And we were the only ones in the staff room, “And please, just call me (Yn).” It was so weird to hear them address me so formally, and it did not help making me more comfortable around them.
“I thought you hated us and didn’t want to be our friends now,” Edward said, a hint of smile lingering around the corner of his lips.
“Why would I think that?” I raised my brow, “I – I actually wanted to thank you two for… Well – you know, yeah.” I added sheepishly.
John chuckled and smile – did he really just do that? Oh God that was new to me. Edward just lifted his lip even more and said, “You don’t have to thank us… You know, we enjoyed that,” he said suggestively.
Wha…?
“So (Yn),” John chuckled again and changed the topic, “About the drama, me and Edward were thinking that you don’t have to prepare for today’s demonstration – we’ll deal with the whole thing and you just have to make sure you know the story well and we’ll lead you through it; it seems less complicated this way – and of course, just make sure you turn up…” he trailed off, and his expression told me that he was enjoying himself.
Why did they like to mess with me like this? Were they flirting with me or what?
“Alright,” I said, strained.
“We’d better get back to preparing for the demonstration now,” John said and turned around with Edward, “See you later, Snow White.”
Then they disappeared into the common room after picking up a stack of stuff from their tables.
