Trigger Warning: Murder
-Maya-
15 years ago. Guadalajara, Mexico."Please!" I whined to papi. "It's midnight mi reina." "I wont tell mami, I promise." My papi stared at me in a serious tone. I gave him puppy eyes and a pouty lip, a masterpiece I learned that is my papis weakness.
"Okay fine but only one more time." He said as I lifted his index finger. I clapped my hands as papi made his way to my guitar. He started playing my favorite song on the guitar.
Photograph by Ed Sheeran.
The notes made me calm in my bed. Papi hummed the lyrics as I sway in my bed to the melody."Shouldn't you be asleep?" Mami said by the doorframe. "I only wanted to hear it uno vez más." I whined. Mami smiled and sat beside me as papi played the last few notes.
"Goodnight mi reina." Papi said as he placed a kiss on my forehead. "Goodnight Maya." Mami rubbed my head. They both left my room and I slowly went to sleep.
3:26 am
I woke up to the sound of glass breaking. I scratched my eyes as turned my side lamp on. Mami's screams started to fill the house. I was scared. I remember Mami and Papi told me if anything bad ever happens, I need to hide and stay until they come get me.
I ran to my closet and closed the door. I hid behind boxes and had Mr.Williams with me, my teddy bear.
My papi begged for mami. "Please don't do this!" I heard my papi scream in the house.
A long bang rang between all the walls in the house. I couldn't hear my parents anymore. Silence filled the house and it made me feel acid slowly rise in my throat.
Footsteps came up the stairs and my door busted open. Loud footsteps crept on my wood floor. A tall figure stood in front of my nightstand. Their hand smacked my lamp, crashing it against the floor. Another body entered the room.
"Stop messing around. Where's the daughter?" "I don't know, she isn't here." 2 male voices talked back to each other. I had my hand over my mouth and had myself in a fetal position. "She might be with the older brother." "Doesn't matter, we got the job done at least, let's go." The men walked out of the room.
The front door slammed shut and silence filled the house once again. I slowly took my hand off my mouth but I didn't dare move. I waited for mami or papi to come get me.
Time went by and I haven't heard nothing. The house remained quiet and the usual warm aura was replaced with a cold feeling.
The front door opened again and my body went stiff. "Mama, Papa, I'm ho-." My brother Santiago yelled from downstairs. His voice cut off for a second and my heart raced.
Santiago's cry's echoed in the house. "No! Mama, Papa!" My brother sounded distressed. I moved the boxes in my closet but one of them fell off another.
"Who's there?" Santiago yelled. I stopped moving. Loud thumps hit each stair. I leaned against the boxes as Santiago rushed into my room. "Maya?" He looked around, not finding me.
I opened my closet door and ran to my brother. "Santi, I'm scared!" His arms wrapped around me and protected me. "Thank god you're okay." His sniffles made my heart ache and his tears hit the top of my forehead.
"donde estan mami y papi?" I asked. Santiago started crying again and pulled me closer.
A wet feeling crept on the back of my shirt. I pulled away from our hug and felt my back. When I looked back at my hands, red filled my palms. I looked over and saw Santiago's hands were filled red.
"Santi?" I lifted my head to see him looking down at my hands. A tear ran down his right cheek. "We need to leave Maya." He went towards my dresser and started packing all my clothes into trash bags. "Santi what's going on?" I asked, scared of what has come over my brother. He didn't answer my back. "Sant-."
"Someone killed mom and dad Maya. They're dead!" He yelled. My heart broke into a million pieces. I felt my eyes become heavy as tears formed.
Santiago went to his room and packed his things as well. I walked downstairs and turned on the light to the hallway. Red paint, no, Blood. A trail from the hallway to the living room was in front of me. I slowly followed the trail, and the closer I got the more I wanted to run.
I stood in the doorframe and my body went numb. Mami and Papi laid on the ground, lifeless. I ran up to them and held mami in my arms. "Please don't leave me." I cried. Tears hit her face but nothing seemed to work. They were gone.
"Please mami. Take me instead!" I cried out. Her skin was cold as ice. Her skin was pale from its usual tan glow.
Santiago grabbed me and lifted me off the ground. "Let's go." He said in a harsh tone. Before we left, I took mami and papi's hands and interlocked them together. One last time.
Me and Santiago ran out of the house with trash bags over our shoulders. We ran through woods and train tracks, not knowing where we're going.
Santiago grabbed my wrist and pulled me to run faster. We hit water and I was shaking from the cold feeling wrapping around me. Swimming wasn't my best hobby. "Hurry up or La Llorna is going to get you." My brother said. I swam faster, nearly passing my brother in the process.
We made it out of the water and back on land. We hit more dirt and trees, indicating we are in another forest.
We kept running till daylight set in. We had no idea where we were. We don't know how far we would go till we know we're safe. A 8 year old little girl and a 10 year old boy, running from their once loved home.
I did shed a few tears writing this chapter.
