Just as my father cuts off the line, I heard glass shatter downstairs.

I rush downstairs to see Maya staring at a broken window. I run towards her and push her behind me. "I don't know what happened." She says frightened.

I look on the wood floor and see a rock. "Are you okay?" I frantically ask Maya. I grab her arm and check for any cuts on glass shards.
"Noah I'm fine, I'm just a little shaken up that's all." She reassures me.

I pull Maya into a long hug, holding her as she fights to let go. "Noah." "Don't speak. Just stay here for a while with me."

Maya wraps her arms around my waist and just like that, my heart beats at a normal pace again. Holding her in my arms, safe and sound.

I knew when I took this job that Maya would be a big distraction, but that doesn't change that I promised Santiago that I would protect her.
And that's exactly what I'll do.
