Marley and Alpha Joey didn't have to wait long before Denice came crashing through the double doors. "Marley," she quickly gripped onto the young girl, hoping to bring her to Layla as quickly as possible.
Even in broken friendship, Denice would do anything for Layla when it came down to desperate measures.
Marley looked shocked that Denice was pulling her, and Alpha Joey quickly followed— worried and stressed as he raced behind.
Denice started to sob, hearing a broken voice mumbled in the room.
Suddenly, Marley collapsed to the ground.
Denice was pulled to a stop, and Joey had to jump out of the way before he stepped on poor Marley. Luckily, he didn't waste anytime before picking up the young she-wolf.
His eyes recognize the pain. His own wolf whimpered out for a future pack mate.
"Denice, lead us to the room," he growled out, hoping to give the two a chance to say goodbye. Luna Denice nodded her head before turning around.
It was a matter of seconds before they were in the room with Layla and Gabby.
Layla cried in joy when she saw Marley, not able to see Marley's pain. "Marley," she whimpered, reaching for her mate.
With permission from Gabby, Alpha Joey set Marley on the bed. Both of the women had tears in their eyes as they started to hold onto each other. Sparks flew full forced for the first time for Marley, and didn't want to think about it being the last time.
"Don't go," she cried, "please Layla."
Layla could barley move to kiss Marley on the lips. She could feel her wolf separate from her soul. "I," her voice crack, "I can't promise you that Marley." She choked on her tears, "I love you."
Marley screamed.
Layla closed her eyes, barley holding on.
Marley squeezed her eyes shut as she focused. She could hear her mother's words echoing in her head. She could hear her father's voice pounding in her ear.
She had to. She needed to save Layla, even if there was an audience. Marley placed her palm on Layla's heart, the beating getting softer and softer, slower and slower.
She ignored how Gabby fell down to her knees, her head resting against the bed as she silently cried in agony.
Gabby couldn't believe that her best friend was gone.
Gabby would had traded in her life for hers, knowing that Layla was as happy as any she-wolf could be. She would also do it for Marley, never wanting the young she-wolf to go through any more pain.
Marley whimpered, her hand shaking as she realized her powers weren't working— just like it did with her wrist in that one hospital room.
She could hear Denice yelling for a doctor, any doctor, already knowing they needed a miracle to save Layla.
The Alpha stared down, his heart getting broken for Marley. He wouldn't wish losing a mate to his worst enemy. He knew losing someone so close could drastically change a person. He feared what the future would bring for Marley, as she laid onto top of her mate.
In frustration, Marley slapped her hand on Layla's chest. "Please!" She screamed, nuzzling her head into Layla, "Stay with me! Don't leave me!"
As Layla started to fade, Marley couldn't help but start to break.
Layla was dying, and there wasn't anything Marley could do to save her mate.
She whimpered, her head clinching on her mate's shirt. Marley wished she told Layla the truth about herself, about her family. Layla was the one person in the world she should had told, but she kept her lips shut.
A loud beep blared across the room, as if it was siren.
Marley glanced up at Alpha Joey, praying, wishing that he would do something, anything. She looked up into the man's eyes, and knew the look.
Pity.
She screamed again.
"Layla!" Her voice huffed out louder than expected, but Marley didn't care. All she wanted was her mate, the one special women she was supposed to cherish forever.
Layla felt the feeling in her fingers leave her, and a numb feeling traveled across her body. The presence of her wolf was hanging on by a thread, using every little bit of strength to save themselves. The burning sensation continued to roam across her body, over heating the sparks of Marley's touch till she couldn't feel anything.
She struggled to speak, to breath. She deeply wished she could say goodbye.
She wanted to thank Gabby for being there for her.
Apologize to Alpha Joey for giving him a hard time when he was courting Denice.
Tell Denice that she forgave her, even if she never wanted to be her best friend again.
Most importantly, she wanted to tell Marley she loved her. She wanted to tell Marley to find her happiness, to live on with a smile.
A tear slowly rolled down her face as she watch Marley scream at the top of her lungs.
Then the beeping stopped, and Layla exhaled for the last time.

Well, Layla died.
The end.
Just kidding.
I'll see you guys next chapter. I think it's going to be a big one. It's been a while since I've been writing, so I should probably go back and read the chapters— of both versions— to make sure I follow through.
QQ (#21): Why do you think Luna Denice wanted to speak to Layla?
QQ (#22): How did I write this chapter? (I don't think I can write pain very well...)
