Beyond The Oath

A Pointed Question.

At Walter Reed Military hospital Dr. Todd Gelfand was being paged to trauma room one where he is met by two suits from the CIA.

Agent: "Are you Dr. Todd Gelfand?"
Gelfand: "Yes, is there something wrong?"
Agent: "We need to place a patient into your care."

Gelfand: "Okay, who's my patient?"
Agent: "Follow me."
Gelfand: "Oh yeah allow me to go into my own trauma room."

Agent: "This is Agent Gibbs-"
Gelfand: "GIBBS!"
Agent: "You know him?"
Gelfand: "Guess that wasn't in your intelligence report?"
Agent: "You are under federal law, you cannot release to anyone that he is alive you got it?"

Gelfand: "If I don't?"
Agent: "We would have to arrest you."
Gelfand: "And put me into a federal prison, got it."
Agent: "Glad we're on the same page. This is a-"
Gelfand: "Matter of National Security, yeah this ain't my first rodeo."

Agent: "Thanks for your cooperation."

Gelfand: (Under his breath) "Like I had a choice."

Gelfand: "Get me an OR now!"

Nurse: "Yes sir."

Gelfand gets Gibbs into surgery, he's losing blood, even though he was patched up on the USS Ronald Reagan. He was the victim of a grenade blast. Gelfand discovered what happened to him and was shocked.

Gelfand: "And he's alive."

Nurses: (Clap)

Gelfand and his lead nurse get Gibbs into his room, and she starts asking questions.

Nurse: "Who were those men you were talking to?"
Gelfand: "They dropped Gibbs off."

Nurse: "CIA?"
Gelfand: "How'd you know?"
Nurse: "I knew 'em."
Gelfand: "How did you-"
Nurse: "Just trust me."

Gelfand: "Alright."

Nurse: "Has this happened before?"
Gelfand: "Not in my 30 some years."

Nurse: "Do you know this man?"
Gelfand: "Yes I did or do, but the shocking thing is I went to his funeral last week."
Nurse: "Explains the CIA."

Gelfand: "I can't not tell his friends."

Nurse: "Don't get thrown in prison for that."
Gelfand: "You're right."

Nurse: "Why don't we make you comfortable."

Gelfand: "What did you do before this?"

Nurse: "Field medic with the SEALS, three tours in iraq."

Gelfand: "Damn."

Nurse: "People look at me and don't expect that, I know."

Gelfand: "Bad ass."

Nurse: "Heh thanks."

A couple of days later Gelfand is doing his rounds, when he hears a familiar voice yelling in the hall and goes to see what's going on.

Gelfand: "Hey what's going on!?"
Nurse: "Sir he knows."
Gelfand: "How the hell do you know Tobias!?"
Fornell: "I have my people come. IS IT TRUE!?"
Gelfand: "Come on."

In Gibbs room.

Fornell: "Good god what the hell happened to him!?"
Gelfand: "Grenade."

Fornell: "Was he on top of it?"
Gibbs: (In a raspy weak voice) "Yes."

Gelfand: "Welcome back Gibbs."

Gibbs: "What the-aw (takes a deep breath) happened?"

Fornell: "I don't know, you tell us Jethro."

Gibbs: "I thought- (grabs his ribs his good hand)

Fornell: "Gibbs you alright?"

Gibbs: Son of bitch, hh-ell no!" (closes his eyes tight)

Gelfand: "More morphine please."

Fornell: "Good to see you alive Jethro."

Gibbs: "Alive, what do you mean?"

Fornell: "He doesn't know."

Gibbs: "Know what?"

Gelfand: "You're on your own."

Gibbs: "What the-ah-hell is going on."

Fornell: "Gibbs, we buried your ass last week."
Gibbs: "WHAT-ah,ah-HELL?!"

Fornell: "You didn't know?"

Gibbs: "NO!"

Fornell: "I sure as hell don't know."

Gelfand: "If it helps he was dropped off by two CIA."

Gibbs: "I was-agh- what?"

Fornell: "You had no idea about this."

Gibbs: "No!"

Fornell: "Well I'll call SecNav."

Gelfand: "You can't do that."

Fornell: "She's my people."

Gelfand: "Fine."

Couple of hours later a confused SecNav comes to the hospital to see what was going on.

SecNav: "What the hell-"

Fornell: "Shhh."

SecNav: "What the hell happened to him!?"

Gibbs: "Me and grenades don't go together."

SecNav: "Oh damn, how ya feeling?"

Gibbs: "Chest is on fire."

SecNav: "What happened?"

Gibbs: "FOB was attacked."

Fornell: "Jethro you alright?"
Gibbs: "No."

SecNav: "Dumb question."

Gelfand: "You really need rest."

Fornell: "How the hell is he alive?"
Gelfand: "I don't know."
SecNav: "Do you know what happened?"
Gelfand: "We only have what the CIA told us."
Fornell: "Which was?"
Gelfand: "That crazy son of a bitch jumped on a grenade."
Gibbs: "I-ow-heard that!"

Gelfand: "You're supposed to be resting Gunny!"
Gibbs: "Eh."

Gelfand: "You can't tell anyone else, or we'll be thrown into a federal prison."
Fornell: "Wouldn't be the first time."
Gelfand: "I don't even want to know." (Walks away)

Fornell: "You want to know?"
SecNav: "Hell why not."

Fornell: "Gibbs was thrown into a French prison for punching out a french cop."

SecNav: "Why did he do that?"
Fornell: "Tried to make a move on Jenny Shepard and didn't take no for an answer."
SecNav: "Oooh."

Fornell: "Then I ended up joining him."
SecNav: "Why?"
Fornell: "The cop had friends."

SecNav: "Ju-just stop there"
Fornell: "You wanted to know."
SecNav: "Yeah and that was my mistake."

Fornell: "Eh." (Looks at her with a smile)

SecNav: "You trying to make a move on me Tobias?"
Fornell: "What? No!"

SecNav: "You could just ask."
Fornell: "Would you like to get a cup of coffee sometime?"
SecNav: "Love too."
Gibbs: "Will you two get a room!"
Fornell: "Shut it Jethro."

SecNav: "You two sound like an old married couple."

Gibbs: "Feels like it sometimes, cause I can't get rid of 'em."
SecNav: (Snickers)

Fornell: "Jethro-"
Gibbs: "Go-agh-away!"
Fornell: "Wanna go get that cup of coffee now?"

SecNav: "Sure."

The two leave to get their cup of coffee and leaves Gibbs who's supposed to be resting, but is thinking about SecNav and Fornell.
