I stood at his door tapping my foot nervously, as I stood there awkwardly with a crafted rose in hand. I was always awkward when it came to apologies ... and now I stood here with no idea on where to start from. Javier was like my bestfriend and I just pray we could patch things up . He had never been this mad at me ... or ever been mad at me for that matter so I didn't exactly know what to bring as an apology that may warm him up and let him hear me out. I was about to knock when he abruptly opened the door leaving my hand hanging up.
"Ehm... hey. I was about to..." I started awkwardly
"Want to come in?" He asked.
"Ehmm... yes. Thank you. " I replied shyly before stepping in and closing the door. "This is for you. " I said offering the gift.
"Thank you." He replied and we fell back into an uncomfortable silence once again.
"I... I'm sorry about yesterday. I shouldn't have said all of that nor push you away like that. You're literally like one of my bestfriends and you always support me. I was overly sensitive about it for no reason." I apologized. "Besides, I know Levi is kind of a sour topic for you and it was a dirty low blow." I said ashamed.
Levianna had always been a sour topic when it came to Javier and I knew that. Their love story ended in such a tragic way and so prematurely. And from what he told me. It really felt like something right out of a movie script. They had met once at a convenience store when he had an absurd craving craving for icecream on one of his trips to Greece. He moved to a rural area for respite and to relax from town thatxs wen he stumbled on her. They had clashed over a particular flavor they both wanted and h proposed the share it to settle things out. She had agreed under hard struggle as he says and went out to look for an adequate spot to share their icecream. He thought of stopping at a coffee shop but she suggested other wise. She took him out to a clear field with a large expand of green land. He could hardly believe how beautiful it was. She ushered him under a big tree which provided a comfortable shade from the hot summer sun. They had talked while enjoying the icecream and somewhere between the whole conversation, they had fallen for each other. Her father however was completely against their relationship and had a fiancee already ready for her. Her father had even threatened to disown her she persist in her absurd pursuit and even tried rushing her wedding off to the other man. They had tried eloping on the night of the introductory ceremony. But alas, things turned ugly. She had a high argument with her dad but had told Javier she couldn't be part of the plan anymore. It was a rainy night and the roads were slippery. She was rushing home to reach into for the ceremony but however, she lost control of the car. The car skidded out of track and she rammed into a cliff. She bleed out on the spot and couldn't make it to the hospital in time. Unfortunately he learned about it over the news and tried going for the funeral but her father forbade him. He later learnt she was pregnant when the accident happened and that ruined everything. Poor guy had lost the love of his life and his kid all in one day and what was worse was, he couldn't even attend her funeral. Fortunately for him, her sister called him a couple of days before he left and he got to see her grave atleast. Every year, when her death anniversary is close his mood switches and I take over his duties till he gets better. It's a rather tragic story and he was in right to grieve. He was really strong to be this bright most of the time.
He sighed, "yeah, maybe I was over sensitive about that too. I need to move on from that."
"It's in your right to feel the way you do. I was in the same situation for two years. Take your time to heal." I comforted him. "Please tell me we're still friends. "I pleaded with a pout and he laughed out loud.
"So that's what you were worried about? " he asked amused.
"Ofcourse."
"Why yes. We are still very much friends. And I'm flattered." He said leaning back into his chair. "I thought you only showed any form of affection only to Christian."
"Absolutely not. I think it tends to be so much he starts questioning me about my work ethics and relationship with you." I replied.
"Wow. Would never have perked him for the jealous type." He replied with an arched brow.
"Every man is jealous, possessive and territorial. Though some much more than the others." I replied.
"I suppose. hope that doesn't get you in trouble though." He asked worried.
"With him, not so much but his mom is a whole other level."
"Trouble with in laws before marriage. Not a good start. " he snickered
"I know, but his mom is so damn annoying and frustrating. She makes me wanna pull my hair out sometimes. I thought my parents could be a handful at times but they've got nothing on her. It's weird how she use to like me before. That's when we were still high school sweethearts. She always wanted to meet me but he was kinda reluctant about it. Now, it's literally the opposite: she can hardly stand me, and gives me a hard time."
"Hold up did you just say you were high school sweethearts? " he asked
"Yeah,... our story is complicated." I replied with a dismissive hand wave.
"Seems the backstory with all your exes are always complicated." He retorted with an arched brow.
I opened my mouth to object but couldn't find anything to give as excuse.
"By the way, your man asked about you." he said with a smirk.
"Who's that ?" after I caught onto it, and I gave him a flat face.
"Oh c'mon, I'm just kidding. You don't need to decapitate me in your mind." He said amused.
"How did things go then?" I asked .
"Oh, everything went smoothly no distractions or stuttering or thick tension between ex such that you could cut through with a knife."
I sighed tired of his teasing. "Must you repeat that?"
He raised his hands up in mock surrender. "My bad, but on a more serious note,.... everything went on smoothly, the investors enjoyed the proposal, and they did ask about you because they were impressed by your proposal but I'm sure it's more about your pretty face they wanted to see thought." He said sarcastically while looking away.
"Ofcourse." I replied smuggly with a smile, bating my lashes and making a heart frame with my hands. he chuckled at my theatrics.
"As I was saying, we're ahead with everything else. They also want to make some sort of inauguration for the grand opening. And we are to bring a plus one of our choice. " he added.
"Wow. Impressive! I guess it's something big for them to ask everyone to bring a plus one before even starting the project. " I said.
"Yeah. The ground breaking ceremony is in a week. It's nothing too fancy but this work is going to be a long ride. And I'm talking atleast 2 years. Since most of the construction work is already done and it's just about turning things around" he explained.
"I know, changing one or two structures, and redesigning. Change one or two things in the blueprint too." I added.
"I trust you can handle that." He replied
"Ofcourse." I replied confidently.
"Sorry, you may be having alot of back and forth going to his company and all." He said leaning onto his mahogany desk with his hands interlaced and a serious expression on his face. " You sure you'll be fine with that?" He asked worried.
"I can handle it." I affirmed
"Ok. If you say so. " he said leaning back into his chair. "I'll have the files sent to your office later so it gives you ample time to work on them."
"Yes sir." I replied with a salute and stood up immediately to leave.
"Ms Aliyu." He called just as she was about opening the door.
"Yes." I replied turning back to face him.
"Have lunch with me." He asked with his award winning smile.
