The Inferno was an endless black hole. Waves of darkness was pitch black. Yet, I could put my foot down as if there was a solid ground but all was a bottomless hole.
Usually, we could mold the Inferno into any scene like a New York cafe, or even the Eiffel Tower. But Kingsley chose the eerie quiet...the pitch dark to complete the investigation. Bare and intimidating. Business was going to go down.
I felt something stir in my stomach. Anxiety and fear. But I pushed the emotions away.
"So, is this how we get welcomed these days?" The old crook talked with a thick accent. "No tea? No greeting? Just business?" Her eyes narrowed in offense. "I wasn't up for this." She shook her hands in the air looking livid as her layers of bracelets jiggled. "Wait till I see Perry."
Merda's hair was white as snow with little streaks of black here and there. She was dressed in a clean loose dress with hanging sleeves and mismatched shoes. Her presence shook the Inferno.
"Strict business. That is all." Kingsley said firmly with a humorous grin. "And I advice you to lose the attitude, Merda. Hence, you don't want to miss the comfort of your home." He smirked with dark humor.
The old lady's eyes sparked. "Are you mocking me child? Just because I live in a shabby home in the corner of nowhere doesn't mean you can insult me! So unprofessional! Hell, I should be older than you bloody idiots! I bet I can be the Coven King if I tried but I don't have a breath to spare to you bastards of the privileged!"
Kingsley's lips parted for a moment before he sighed. "Are you done, Merda? Should we get started?"
Merda sniffed in offense. "I ain't taking this. I came all the way from Hawaii to do your dirty deeds because you have no capability to do so."
There was an invisible curtain between them and me. Merda didn't see me because apparently I would be "too intimidating" in Kingsley's opinion. That remark hurt me because I thought I was somewhat friendly. Somewhat. But to scare a woman who was already scary, well that sucked.
I was Kingsley's shadow. Matt and Bat were sitting around the desk which was suspended in the middle of the black horizon.
"Matt, bring the barriers..."
Matt opened a huge heavy book at his hand. He recited in perfect Latin: pulling a guard around the table. A magnetic sphere formed around us, closing out any unseen observers. A gust of wind further put a distant between me and them. At least, I could guard against people who could penetrate through the guards and listen in.
"Now, " Kingsley sighed. "Please Merda. I know you are tired but trust me...This is protocol. You have even signed a form to cooperate."
At this, the woman took a slight pity. "Whatever. Give me the object."
With a small grin, the Captain got out the small pouch out of his pocket. Being careful, he laid the gold dagger out on the table.
I gulped, flashbacks wavered in my vision. I was fearful that she would remember this.
The second she lay her eyes on the sword, she instantly scooted back in fear. "Oh my god." She whispered. "Where in heavens did you get this from? Or worse, where from hell?"
"We found this on the crime scene. We're not sure if it was used as a weapon or not since the autopsy showed blood drainage of Jenifer but nevertheless it was left on the ground for a purpose, of course." He explained. "Why?"
I gulped.
Her eyes wavered back in forth in fear, just like that my heart skipped quickly.
A corner of her lip lifted and slowly twitched. "It belongs to the True Queen of Blood Caves. I would know."
