A week had passed since the whole thing with Emily's mom. Her and her siblings couldn't go to school since they were busy basically moving in to their aunts house.
"Emily the doctors called.." Her aunt says as she sits down on the couch next to her. "What did they say? Is she ok?" "Yes.. they treated her.. but she won't be able to come home."
"For how long?" "I don't know yet.. they're sending her back to rehab once they know she's able to leave the hospital." Emily rolls her eyes. "Do you want to go to the mall?"
"No.. Tinas picking me up.. she's taking me out." "You know.. you don't have to hate me." "I don't hate you.. why would I?" "Because I know you hate staying here every time something comes up with your mom.. but I have to stay close so I'm not late to work every morning."
"Why can't we just stay at home by ourselves? We're old enough." "Because if someone finds out you guys are at home unsupervised your mom could get in a lot of trouble."
Emily looks down. "Are you okay?" She nods. "A lot has changed since school started.." "You sure it wasn't since your dad died?" She looks at her. "Both.. but things got worse when school started.. and I feel that's some how my fault.."
"What are you talking about?" "Moms never home.. my brothers miss her.. Nora misses her. And I drove her away because I was upset about what happened to dad.. at first it was just the drinking.. now it's drugs.. I don't want to lose both of my parents.."
"Emily it's not your fault.. Your moms just upset as you are about your father. She just expresses it differently.. I'll talk to her, and I'll try my best to get her back on track. So you guys can say you have a mom."
Emily smiles as she hugs her aunt. "Thank you.."
"Mrs. Hays May I have a word with you?" Mr. Heins says as Emily passes his class.
They both step into his empty room. "You have been absent for a week.. May I ask why?" "I know.. I'm sorry. I tried to tell you earlier but.." "Violet was in here.. I know.."
"Yeah.." She looks away. "You don't want to talk about it?" "Yes I do.. I mean it's nothing.. so it really doesn't matter."
"Emily." "Ok.. my mom overdosed.. she won't be able to come home.. so we have to stay with my aunt.. it's not easy getting to school everyday because she lives far.. and if my mom is gone for too long.. we might have to move in with my aunt.. then I'll have to..."
"Switch schools.." A tear runs down Emily's face as he hugs her tightly.
"Sorry.. I hope I'm not interrupting anything." Violet smiles as she stands in the doorway.
Emily quickly pulls away and wipes her face. "No.. I was just leaving." She rolls her eyes as she passes Violet.
"I just wanted to ask you about the homework." She smiles as she holds up her paper.
He smiles forcefully as he sits down on his desk. "Please come in." She smiles while walking in. "I wanted to see if I can turn this in during extended day on Thursday.. since I won't be able to tomorrow."
"Why not?" "I have a family thing.." She smiles while stepping closer. He stands up and walks around his desk. "I guess I can give you extra time.. but if it isn't turned in by Thursday.. that's detention."
"Yes sir.. I will give it to you Thursday.." She bites her lip as she makes her way to his door. "Oh and Mr. Heins.." He looks at her.
"Is everything okay with Emily? I saw you two hugging.." He clears his throat. "Yes.. she's fine." "Oh.. you think she's fine?"
