Chapter 17:

---

Ray must admit, that battle was something else. When fighting in a dense area, you're bound to be panicking all over, but the fact he managed to pull off a last stand and win? Against a cheater?

That mortar bombardment, and the charge clutch did contribute...a little amount, but it mostly contributed mental damage because of past experiences.

Still, as they rock from side to side from the careful care of the back of the chinook, Ray snapped out of it, and looked at the remains of his squad individually. They're all tired, covered in paint, and most likely want to go home and eat dinner, but due to spent adrenaline, they're still high and kicking...

With the exception of Mako who's sleeping soundly on Andrew's shoulder. As soon as both of them sat down, she instantly slumped over his shoulder, making him freeze. Saori had to buckle Mako down for her, because...she forgot. She's all tuckered out.

John and James were sitting next to each other, covered in bruises and cuts, and their uniforms are dirtied up, and patched with red. They ignore the blood trickling down to their neck as they continue to make frantic hand gestures, and obnoxious laughter when reminiscing about their experience. Hana sits a seat apart from John, while Saori sits oddly close to James.

Matthew and Miho are close, but they kept a distance away from each other because of two things; they need a shower, and Miho fears that if she sits next to Matthew, she might act up his bruises, even though he clearly isn't phased. Of course, that's probably the numb shock that hadn't got away.

The others were amazed when they got out of war shock-they can be heard bragging all the way to the strip garage, or, maybe the male dormitory? It's quite uncertain, but knowing there's a bathhouse there, Ray and the others truly need a hot bath.

Recalling the recent battle, Ray realised how quick the women's mood changed. Of course, that's normal for women, but their emotions made a quick 180 into becoming bloodthirsty maniacs. They seem to lampshade this, and find it particularly weird.

Miho: "I have no idea what just happened back there; it's like I became a completely different person after Ray yelled."

Matthew: "It happens most of the time. Ray can't help being so inspiring he got inexperienced conscripts to become more suicidal."

Yukari: "Well, I mean, having to rally conscripts is pretty common back in the day. But man! That was so cool! I can't wait to write this in my journal!"

Hana: "How am I gonna tell my mother?..."

John: "That you were awesome? I can't wait to tell ours! What do you think she'll react, Booze-man?"

James: "A chancla to the back of the head?"

John: "Hm, you may not be wrong. Maybe with an ear blistering rant about how we're disrespecting papa and stuff."

Saori: "That's not a nice way to talk about your mother like that."

Miho: "Then again, mothers may also talk down on us while we aren't looking... I should know..."
