prompt: "and as the waves return to the sea, so the words give way to silence."
i've always crashed
against the shoreline
of your heart,
touching land
with sea glass fingers,
laying my tidal-wave palm
on the coarse sureness of the sand,
wanting to press
my salty lips
to your sun-warmed ones
that taste of dawn
and new beginnings
waiting to be grasped
and spun into new stories,
and soon i am
spilling my ocean thoughts
into you,
clinking words together
into a string of
gleaming, moon-white pearls,
hoping you'll wear them
like they're something
to be treasured
and kept close,
hoping that my words
retrieved from the
bleached, abandoned
sea floor
will be enough
to help me walk along
your shore,
maybe even
past the pretense
and into the mainland,
but dusk was quick
to wash over us
in somber finality,
in pink hues and passion reds
that will give way
to cool onyx and shadow:
a backdrop for the stars
to shine against,
and as my waves
return to the sea,
so the words
give way to silence
love,
mari
