Chapter 5: 57TH CATASTROPHE

The scene begins with the day of the 57th Expedition beyond the wall. All the scouts were on horseback, waiting for the gates to open. At the main part of the formation, Erwin was ready to lead the charge, followed by Levi Squad with the two shifters. Since he wasn't ready for ODM gear, Oswald was riding with Petra as they waited for the gates to open.

Oswald: (smiles) my first mission with the scouts!

Petra: just remember to keep your hood up and don't let go of me, okay?

Levi: (looks back at them and mutters) can't believe this brat is actually coming with us.

When it came to planning this, they had some idea on what Eren's Titan was like, but Zen Aku was still a mystery in some regards. So, since Hange gave her word on not doing any dangerous experiments, they decided to give a more field test approach. Is this stupid and insane? Absolutely. But to be fair, this entire plan is crazy enough as it is. Anyways, the bells rang, and the gates began to open.

Erwin: the 57th Recon Mission begins now! Scouts, onwards!

The sounds of horses galloping was heard as the mission began and they took off. After going through the remains of a deserted town, and dealing with titans that were nearby, the formation starts as scouts move to their positions. As they rode, Oswald looks around and had a small smile.

Oswald: the land's pretty out here.

Oluo: it's not a field trip, brat. There's still titans out here, so take this seriously.

Eld: ease off him. Just let the kid enjoy the view for a bit.

For what felt like hours, they rode. After a while, they began to notice green flares being shot up. On expeditions, each colored flare had a meaning behind it: green was for reroute, red was for Titan sighting, blue was for failed mission, and black was for abnormal titans. Seeing all the greens indicated they'll have to take a small detour to their destination.

Scout: (rides up to them) Captain Levi! The right flank's been overwhelmed and destroyed. Survivors have said a new abnormal attacked us, and is moving to the center point as we speak.

Levi: understood. Petra, rely a message to the next group and tell them to pass it.

Petra: yes sir!

Oswald's Thoughts: an abnormal coming here?

Zen Aku: hmmm...

Oswald's Thoughts: what's wrong?

Zen Aku: are you sure that an abnormal would attack us here?

Oswald's Thoughts: that's what the others are saying. Why?

Zen Aku: because this seems too specific for a minor annoyance to just arrive here. Stay sharp. I have a feeling your desire to destroy the monsters will come in soon enough.

*SHORT TIMESKIP*

The forest was in sight and the middle section was making their way in. However, Eren noticed a problem with being in here.

Eren: Captain! Captain Levi!

Levi: what?

Eren: what do you mean "what?" We're in a forest. If just the center flank's cut off, we won't see a Titan until it's right on top of us. And something's approaching us on the right. So what are we supposed to do? Avoid Titans or defend the wagon?

Levi: quit whining and move from the obvious. Neither of those is an option anymore.

Eren: wha? What are you talking about?
