The BLI summer jam. It's something that DNCE had been looking forward to for months. Their fans were full of energy at events like this and it's what they lived for.
Joe had been doing slightly better since dropping off Porky. Without the constant reminder of Addison, he had been able to walk through his house without constantly wanting to enter the room and sit for hours on end. But he was far from over her, and regardless of having a reminder or not, she was still always on his mind.
As the band walks around the packed festival, surprised that they aren't being bombarded with fans, they enjoy the scenery, the normalcy of it.
"This is awesome," Cole says, jumping up and down a few times making his band mates laugh at him.
Joe glances around at the crowd, taking a double take after seeing a familiar face.
Addison. She was here. But... different. This wasn't the Addison he knew, it wasn't the Addison he had grown to love.
She stands a few yards away, black jeans, white shirt and leather jacket, earrings dangling from her ears, leather boots hugging her feet. There was an overall edgy feel to her. Something he had never seen before. She was with two girls. Girls he had never seen in pictures from before they met or anything. They must be new friends.
Good, she's making new friends.
Or so he thought.
He turns away, him and the band walking in the opposite direction.
Addison, standing over with Kerian and Jessica, laughs with them at a joke she doesn't think is funny. They weren't here to be enjoying themselves anyway, they were there for work. But these two girls in particular were two that liked to play as well. If only Addison could allow herself to have actual fun.
Addison had turned into someone she used to be... but not. Instead of doing the work she did and hating it, Addison threw herself in full force. She liked the fact that she controlled something for once in so long. She loved the way it made her feel. Powerful and important. She wasn't sitting at home letting everything pass her by. She was out in the world doing things. Sure, it was things she wasn't proud of but what's the difference? She was alive and doing something. If she was being honest, she had created a persona of the person David and Jacklyn had wanted her to be. The person she was trained to become. Only the first time, she didn't even pretend to be the person they wanted her to be. Now, she does. Because it's the only way she's found she can survive. Uncaring, unkind, tough... ruthless.
Things are different at home too. Her family sees it. She doesn't spend time with them. She's always gone and makes comments that aren't nice.. They know she's pretending, they know she's hurting, they've tried to help but she's convinced herself it's who she is and who she needs to be.
As the day drags on, Addison hears DNCE get announced, making her way to the stage, she watches the set, staring at Joe the whole time, finding her heart aching and her stomach twisting... but loving the sight of him all the same. After his show, she meets back up with her friends, finding the guy they were sent to find in the first place.
"Look, I'm gonna have the money I owe your boss next week, " he whispers, trying to keep it calm.
"Funny, cause you've been saying that for three weeks now," Addison says. "Time's up."
"Please," he begs, staring her in the eyes.
"Too late," she says, smirking.
"Can we this time?" Jessica asks over Addison's shoulder.
Addison sighs, rolling her eyes. "Fine, but don't fuck it up. I'm hungry anyway," she says, walking away and towards the food trucks.
Deciding on an order of cheese fries to start with, she buys them and begins picking through them, looking for a table to sit by her lonesome.
Addison gasps, cheese and other food smearing all over her shirt and flying through the air.
"Shit, I'm so sorry-" a familiar voice says, grabbing at napkins nearby.
"Joe?" she asks.
The guy finally looks up, peering at Addison over his sunglasses that were keeping him from being recognized.
"Addison." he breathes.
"Um," she says, taking in a breath and twisting her mouth to the side.
"Let me get you a new shirt." he says, quickly throwing the dropped food away and starting to walk to a merch site.
Addison follows him slowly, getting there as he picks up a plain white tank in her size and pays for it, holding it out for her.
"Thanks," she says awkwardly, placing it on her body under the tshirt and then sliding the shirt off and tossing it in a trashcan nearby.
"I will never understand how you can do that," he states.
She looks up at him, shrugging. "I um, I don't even remember."
He chuckles, gulping. "How's Porky?"
She looks up at him, licking her lips. "I'm not home much so Jenna takes care of him most of the time."
Joe nods. "Oh, um, okay. Look, Addison-"
"Addieeee!" Kerian sings as she and Jessica skip over.
"I have to go," she says, starting to walk away before turning back to Joe. "Come to my parent's house tomorrow. You can see Porky and we can talk."
He raises his eyebrows.
"They're both gone until 4," she finishes quickly before rushing off to the girls.
"All done!" Jessica smiles.
"Shut up," Addison barks, causing both of them to cower down and quiet down.
Joe's eyebrows raise before furrowing.
"Don't you two know anything? What if someone finds him?" she says,
Joe hears, putting the pieces together and closes his eyes.
No, she wouldn't go back to that. He thinks to himself. She hated that.
