APRIL 5th, 2010

Things started off normal, people going to and from work, stopping at the grocery store for things they might've missed or needed, parents picking their children up from school or daycare.

A loud alarm went off, phone alarms went and billboards all across the world lit up with words no person ever wants to hear. "THIS IS A STATEWIDE EMERGENCY-" panic would spread through cities and small towns. People rushing to leave their homes that they once felt safe in.

Willow was at work when it happened, the hospital going from hectic to complete chaos in a matter of seconds. Doctors and patients(the ones who could leave) rushing to their homes to gather family. Willow's heart raced as she made her way to the parking garage, car tires screeching as they sped off. All that was on her mind was her dog and two friends, they were her family.

Willow hopped into her old blue Jeep, a gift from her father. She shoved the key into the ignition, the motor roaring to life as she too sped out of the parking garage.

Each street was packed, cars honking and people yelling, hoping that the traffic would move so that they could make it home. It was like a scene from a natural disaster movie except this wasn't natural, none of this was.

Willow cursed, slamming her hand against the horn before deciding to find another way home. Her apartment wasn't far and it was smack dab in the center of the city. She could make it, she had too.

She picked up her phone, using the small amount of battery that she had left to get in touch with her friends. "I don't know where the hell either of you are but we need to leave. Meet me at my place. grab as much food, water and clothes as you can carry and get the hell over here." She left each one a message hoping they received them.

Willow found her way home after a few trips through a tight alley which involved a few scratches in the process. She'd fix it later if she got the chance.

She was practically running up the four flights of stairs to her small apartment, people rushing from their homes and shoving her as they bounded down the flights of stairs. Willow was sweaty and out of breath as she scrambled for the right key, her sweaty hands not helping one bit. She could hear blue inside, barking and whining because he too knew something wasn't right. Willow whispered a soft prayer as she finally got the door open although she wasn't the religious type, thanking whichever god out there for getting her home in one piece.

Blue greeted her with butt wiggles and wet kisses. "Oh my baby." Willow sighed, relief washing over her. "I don't know what the hell is going on but we gotta go boy." And then she heard it, an ear piercing scream. The hairs on the back of her neck raised as she slowly inched to the balcony, shaky hands reaching out to grasp the handle. She pushed the sliding door open and stepped out, small steps leading her to the ledge. She looked down and there it was, she felt sick. Willow slapped a hand to her mouth as she watched in horror, her neighbor on the ground as four rotting corpses chowed down on her as if she was a five star restaurant. She stepped back only to trip over her own feet, her body falling to the floor with a loud thud.

A loud knock snapped her out of her daze, familiar voices screaming to let them in and in a second Willow was on her feet and running to the door. "What the hell is going on out there!? I saw the old man from 202 gnawing on some lady's arm." Her friend Amelia practically screamed as she pushed her other friend Aster into the apartment. "I don't know but we need to get the hell out of here." Willow quickly shut the door behind them. "Where would we even go? All the roads out of the city are backed up." Aster held her small baby closer to her chest.

"Remember my family has that house up in the mountains." Willow began to move, her legs quickly carrying her to her bedroom, her friends following close behind. "Yeah, what about it?" Amelia asked as she began pulling things from Willow's closest. "We can go there. It's far from what's going on out there. It'll be safe." Willow had a large duffel bag opened on the bed. She threw in the necessities, underwear and bras, jackets and sweatshirts, shorts and jeans and lots of socks. "Aster, can you pack up the kitchen? The pantry is full and so are the top and bottom shelves. Non perishable." Aster gave a small nod, passing the baby off to Amelia as she rushed into her friend's kitchen.
