Willow finally took a breath, the first one in a long time. She hadn't taken an actual breath since she left the highway.
"Wills..you okay?" Aster peered over taking in her friend's messy appearance. The events that occurred had been close too close and although Willow was strong probably the strongest out of their group aster could tell it had frightened her.
The two women were walking back to where Aster had left the Jeep, the sun beginning to set ,the sky beginning to turn a dark orange as night was nearing. Willow kept her gaze straight ahead, her eyes sharp and attentive. "They shouldn't come looking for us. I'll take watch tonight to make sure." Her voice came out barely above a whisper as she didn't want to draw any unnecessary attention from any passing brain eaters.
Aster led the way to the Jeep eager to make it back to her baby. "You saved those kids back there.." her friend's voice was soft. "Most wouldn't have done anything. You risked your life for total strangers." Aster tried to comfort the girl but Willow didn't want comforting.
On the invested highway Willow's life had flashed before her eyes, her happiest moments replaying in her brain trying to keep her from the horrors that were just beyond that old burgundy van. Yes she had saved those children yes she risked her life but at what cost. She could have people hunting her and her family as if they were animals and that was the thing that terrified her more than the rotting corpses that stalked the earth.
"It'll be dark soon." Willow stopped and tilted her head back, her eyes trained on the darkening sky. It was getting cooler out. It felt nice against her burning skin. She really needed to hunt for sunscreen.
The two women walked further, the orange sky now barely a sliver as darkness began to take over. In a small clearing on the side of the highway was the old blue Jeep branches and leaves covering parts of it to make it seem like it had been there awhile. Willow could hear blue inside whining and whimpering as he smelled his owner. She was quick, her steps picking up a faster pace as she neared the Jeep.
She swung the door open to reveal her dog, his loud whines and whimpering echoed throughout the quiet roadside. Willow moved forward, her arms wrapping around the dog's neck. "There's my good boy." She cooed softly rubbing at his neck and sides, blue's tongue painted her cheeks and ear with slobber, his tail wagging and smacking against the seat. "You did so good boy." Willow gave his head a soft kiss.
Aster began tossing the bag of food and other things that Willow had picked up on the highway into the back of the Jeep with blue. "We should get going. It's getting dark." The young woman looked up at the darkening sky. They had been out longer than either of them had wanted. The two women wasted no time in climbing into the Jeep. Willow in the driver's seat and aster in the passenger seat.
"It's been a very eventful day." Aster let out a soft chuckle as she leaned her head against the window. "Found Charlie some clothes and had to lead a bunch of brain eaters away." She gave her friend a tired smile. "We did good today. Both of us." Her hand found its way to Willow's thigh giving it a tight squeeze resulting in the driver letting out a squeal. Willow was incredibly ticklish. "Don't do that! I'm driving. We could've ended up in a ditch." The young woman shook her head, pushing her friend's hand away.
Aster let out a loud cackle. She always had an obnoxious laugh but that's how Willow knew that her friend was truly happy even in this shitty world her friend somehow found a way to laugh. Willow found herself laughing along with her, a loud obnoxious laugh erupting from her chest. The ride back to the cabin was full of laughter and singing as if the world hadn't gone to shit as if neither of them almost died today.
