"Steady" Willow aimed her blade for an unsuspecting squirrel.
"Gotcha!" She cried out as she tossed the knife, it landing in the middle of the squirrel's back.
The small rodent fell to the ground with a small thud, its limp body nestling in the leaves that covered the ground.
"Willow: 1 squirrel: 0" she grinned as she pulled the knife out of its back. She whipped the blood on her jeans.
"Not bad there." Dale said from behind her. A riffle in his hands. "Best squirrel hunting I've ever seen."
Willow bowed, tipping her imaginary hat. "Thank you."
Willow was out in the woods with some of the others. It was another steamy afternoon in july and rick had gathered a few people to go on a small hunt. Their task: find squirrels or rabbits.
Rick picked willow and daryl to go, dale then volunteered stating that he needed to stretch his legs, rick joined and so did shane.
Daryl had gone ahead leaving the four behind. Dale took his time walking through the woods and Rick and Shane walked ahead.
All of the muscles on Shane were tense, the back of his shaved head sweaty and shiny. His knuckles were white as they gripped the gun.
Willow felt uneasy.
Shane had a way of making everyone around him uneasy.
The two men ahead were talking about upping patrol around the farm to be on the safe side. Shane suggested that they should teach Carl and some of the others how to shoot but Rick shot down his idea.
Shane didn't like it.
"I'm gonna go ahead. Check a few snares that Daryl set up." Rick announced to the small group.
"I'll join you." Dale called after Rick. "I need to learn how these snares work."
This left Shane and Willow alone together. Willow quietly behind him and Shane in front of her.
"Rick needs to start listening to me." Shand gritted out. " gonna get us all killed." His grip tightened around the gun.
"He ain't thinkin about Carl or..or Lori!"
Willow slowed her steps. Being near Shane seemed dangerous at the moment.
"There's a snare down there." Rick said from somewhere amongst the trees.
Shane looked in the direction Rick's voice came from.
The officer stood beside dale in the woods, about twenty feet away from Shane and Willow. His hat on top of his head and his back turned to them.
Shane seethed, his chest visibly rising and falling. Here was his chance. His chance to get rid of Rick. To get Lori back, to get the group back. Rick had taken everything from him by coming back.
Shane slowly held up his rifle, his eye level with scope.
Rick seemed so small and helpless through the rounded scope, like a deer.
One squeeze of the trigger and Rick would be gone. That's all Shane needed.
His hand shook. His finger resting on the trigger.
One shot was all he needed. One bullet is all that it take to bring the man down.
As Shane pressed harder, aiming for Rick's head there was a click and the tip of a gun was placed to the back of Shane's head.
"Give me a reason to pull the trigger." Willow dared him. "Lower the gun now or I'll shoot."
Shane gritted his teeth. Willow was like a annoying fly, didn't matter how many times he swatted or tried getting rid of her she just kept coming back. Buzzing annoyingly in his ear.
Shane lowered his weapon.
"We don't kill our own. You know the rule." Willow pressed the tip further into his scalp before pulling away.
Shane turned around ready to confront Willow but the girl was gone and so was his Rick.
His deer had gotten away.
Daryl's snares had deemed useful. They each came back with a few small rodents.
"Eww." Grimaced Carl as he examined one of the dead rabbits' eyes. The trap had gotten him right through his left eye and had ripped it clean out.
"You think that's gross?" Willow came up behind the boy and leaned down. "Wait till Daryl skins it later."
Carl gagged, shaking his head.
"Be nice please." Carol called out from her spot behind a large soapy tub. "You'll give the boy nightmares willow." She scolded, elbow deep in the water.
Today was laundry day and Willow loved laundry day.
"Oh come on now carol." Shane came up behind Willow, his chest touching the back of her shoulder. "This'il help the boy grow some hair on his chest."
He was standing too close. Way too close.
We need to talk." Shane bent down, whispering in her ear. His hot breath tickling her skin.
Willow grimaced, following the man to the other side of the camper.
Shane had his back towards Willow. He rubbed at his freshly shaven head.
"The woods..." he began.
"What? Where you almost shot Rick. Your friend and the husband of the woman you're in love with and got pregnant?" She crossed her arms.
Shane sighed. "Look, it was an accident."
"Oh yea? You raising your gun, aiming it at his head with your finger on the trigger was an accident."
Shane used the bottom of his shirt to wipe the sweat from his face. "I don't want to hurt Rick..it wasn't-"
"Save it." Willow held up her hand, stopping him. "I'm watching you Shane. One toe out of line and I'm gonna be the one to put a bullet between your eyes." She warned.
"Is that a threat?"
"It's whatever you want it to be but I'm not letting you harm anyone in this group." Willow shoved her finger into his chest. "I have one person to protect and by getting rid of one you'd kill us all."
"Keep your mouth shut and nothin will happen." Shane grabbed her wrist. "Understand?"
Willow yanked her hand away. "Next time you wont get a warning." She warned turning on her heels. "Give me a reason to pull the trigger."
Shane watched as Willow rounded the corner leaving him and the setting sun behind.
