TWO MONTHS AFTER

When the apocalypse hits nobody tells you how boring it'll be, how some nights it's so quiet that you can't fall asleep.

Willow hated the quiet. Hated the lack of noise, hated not being busy. She missed the adrenaline rush that she got from surgery, she missed the chaos.

Willow tried to fill her time, she'd go out on runs to look for weapons and dog food but being so far from a town and not knowing what to expect made it difficult, so she spent most of her time in the woods practicing. Amelia couldn't shoot a gun without almost crying, Aster didn't have much trouble with guns but when it came to knives she had the worst case of the butterfingers and Charlie, well he was baby. This left Willow being the one to hunt or scavenge whenever they needed something.

"We'll have to leave soon. We can't stay here forever." Willow spoke up from the table that they were all sitting around, a can of beans in front of each of them. "Those brain eaters are getting closer by the day. I ran into a bunch when I went today." She glanced up at her friends. "Where would we go? We can't go back to the city you saw how it was." Amelia scooped up some beans before sighing. "The country maybe. We could find an old farm house or something." Willow looked to aster. "We could go east maybe or north." The small group kept spitting out ideas; all were good suggestions. "We can literally go anywhere it's just a matter of how brain eaters are around." Amelia pushed her food to the center of the table before leaning back in her chair, the old wooden legs creaking as more weight was added. "Let me find a map and we'll go from there." And with that the discussion was over.

Willow kept first watch while the others slept, blue always by her side. She had a piece of paper out, a pen in her hand as she wrote down things they needed. 'Baby food, ammo, knives, canned food, diapers, dog food, baby clothes, matches-' she even wrote a section for things they wanted. Books and board games, things like that.

"There has to be somewhere we can go. I didn't think the brain eaters would come up this far." Willow's fingers found their way behind the dog's ear, scratching as they set. "What do you think, boy?" Blue's head rested on her thigh, his eyes closed as he enjoyed her fingers scratching behind his soft brown ears. "We'll figure something out. We always do." Willow whispered, her eyes watching the sky. The bugs outside weren't enough to ease her mind, maybe tomorrow it will be better.

"Mind if I join you?" Aster leaned against the front porch railing, watching as the girl piled things into the back of the beat up blue Jeep. "You sure?" Willow looked up, her eyes squinting from the harsh sun. "You think you're ready for a run? I mean you just learned how to use a knife let alone shoot a gun." Willow knew that Aster was strong; she was a quick learner and fast on her feet when she needed to be. "Yeah. I got this." Aster gave her a reassuring smile. "You can give me some pointers on the ride over." She gave her friend a nod. "Go tell Amelia that we're heading out.."

Willow helped Blue into the back of the Jeep before hopping in herself. "You shouldn't have any problems with the brain eaters while we're gone." Willow slipped on her dark sunglasses before turning to Amelia who stood on the porch with baby Charlie in her arms. "If some happen to show up then turn off the lights and be quiet till they pass. We won't be gone too long." Amelia nodded, her dark curls bouncing with each head bop. "Yes mother. We'll be good, don't worry." Willow rolled her eyes, her hand going up and flipping the older girl off. "Be back soon, smart ass." She called out before starting the Jeep and pulling out of the dirt driveway.

"You got a list?" Aster asked, yelling over the wind as they zoomed down the mountain road. "Yeah! Check the glove box." Willow glanced through the rear view mirror, watching a corpse slowly trudging down the side of the road.
