"How are you feeling Carl?" Willow asked as she checked his bandages. "Any pain or discomfort?" Her eyes flickered to his.
Carl shook his head, his fingers playing with the sheets. "I'm okay." He said sucking in a breath as Willow's cold fingers touched a tender spot around his wound.
"On a scale from 1 to 10 how are you feeling?" She asked as she began to change the bandages. "1 being discomfort and 10 being really really painful."
"8." He winced, shutting his eyes tight.
"An 8?"Willow nodded. "Alright Carl. I'm going to get you something for the pain and something to help you sleep." She said as she covered him back up. "But I want you to try and eat something today. I don't want the medicine hurting your tummy, okay?"
Carl nodded. "Okay."
"Good boy." She smiled brushing down the boy's hair. "I'll have Hershel bring you the medicine and I'll see if Maggie can make you something small to eat." She said, slipping her hands into her back pockets.
Carl nodded once again and pulled the blanket closer to his chin.
"If you need anything, let Hershel or Maggie know. I'm going out on a run for more bandages." She gave the boy a smile. "Try to get some rest and try to eat something for me. We need you better okay?" She said as she made her way to the door.
"Yes ma'am." Carl smiled shyly.
"I'll make sure to check on you before I leave. If you're awake when I come to check on you then you can give me a list of things you'd like." Willow said, giving him a wink before stepping out of the room.
Willow walked down the hall and to the kitchen, her shoes making soft thuds. Her hands dug deep into her pockets and her hair up in a ponytail.
"How is he?" Asked Maggie as she stepped into the kitchen.
"Besides some pain he's doing remarkably well for someone who just went through something traumatic." She said as she picked up an apple. "Do you mind keeping an eye on him? I'm heading out to get more supplies." She asked.
Maggie nodded. "Yeah of course."
"I'm giving him something for pain and to help him sleep." She said as she rubbed the apple onto her shirt. "I'm not sure how long I'll be gone but give him pain meds when he either asks for it or his pain is above a 3. If his pain is above a 3, give him pain meds and a muscle relaxer or something to help him sleep." She explained. "Try to get him to eat something. The pain meds might upset his stomach and with where his wound is I'm afraid it'll open up his stitches if he gets sick."
Maggie nodded, making a mental note of what the surgeon said.
"Hershel will know this." Willow took a bite of the sweet red apple. "I'm going to see if Carol or Glenn can look after Charlie while I'm away."
Maggie nodded, already getting out the pills for Carl. "I'm sending you a list. There's a few things that daddy needs." She said passing Willow a folded paper.
Willow nodded. "I'll make sure to get as much as I can." She said stuffing the paper into her pocket. "I'm going to head on out. Let anyone know that if they need me to get them anything that now is the time." She said as she stepped out of the kitchen her half eaten apple clutched in her hands.
As Willow stepped out onto the porch the smell of old Marlboro cigarettes wafted through the air and into her nostrils.
On the steps to the porch set Daryl Dixon a cigarette hanging loosely from his thin chapped lips. He was cleaning his crossbow.
