"How many were in there?" Aster asked, her eyes fixated on the chained up door, the rotting bodies still desperately trying to escape.
"Dozen, two dozen maybe. didn't really stay to count them." Willow cleaned her knife, her mind working in overdrive as she thought about their next course of action.
"You said they're drawn out by loud noise right?" Aster examined her nails as if they weren't standing in front of zombies.
"Yeah. What about it?" Willow glanced up using her hand to block out the blistering midday sun.
"You have those old cassette tapes right? The really crappy 80s and 90s rock music."
Willow nodded as she slipped her knife back into its sheath. "Yeah. I do. Dad loved them and left them to me in his will." Willow hated them; the one thing her father left before joining her mother were some crappy cassette tapes and a red compass.
Aster walked around to the passenger side slinging open the creaky door. "We could blast some AC/DC or Nirvana, maybe something loud to draw them out." Aster shuffled through the glovebox trying to find what she needed.
"Can you drive stick shift?" Willow helped blue into the Jeep. All she needed was for the door to give out and blue to go charging at them.
"Found them." Aster pulled the old cassette tapes out. "Who the hell uses cassette tapes anymore? I mean there's CDs and radios."
Willow couldn't help but grin. "Dad did. I'm sure he has louder ones but those should work." She grabbed a duffel bag from the trunk and tossed it to the ground.
"I have a plan..it's a very dumb and dangerous plan but it's a plan." Willow leaned against the hood of the Jeep.
"Oh yeah?" Aster cocked an eyebrow as she shuffled through the small bag of cassette tapes. "Yeah but it'll work." She runs a hand through her hair, the hot Georgia sun beating down on them.
"You drive my Jeep with one of the cassettes in blaring the music. I'll open the doors and hide while the brain eaters follow. Once the store is clear I'll go in and grab as much food as I can while you take them out of town as far as you can before coming back for me, then we split." Willow laid out the plan, aster nodding along to each word. "Are you sure it'll work? I'm not doing something that'll get you killed." The smaller girl looked up at her friend, worry written on her soft skin. aster was stunning and sometimes it startled Willow how gorgeous she was.
Willow gave her a small pat on the back, a reassuring motion in this stressful time. "I'll be fine. I'm fast. I'll be in and out in no time." She reassured her friend. "Just make sure blue stays in the car. He'll want to hop out when he sees I'm gone." Her hand found their way behind the fluffy dog's ears scratching behind them. "Well then..we should get started if we wanna make it back before dinner." Aster gave the Jeep a tap before making her way to the driver's side. she grabbed blue's collar and leash, attaching him securely in the back so he wouldn't be able to hop out when they started.
The women got into place Aster in the Jeep and Willow outside of the grocery store. "Now!" Shouted Willow as she unwrapped the chain from the door, swinging the heavy board cover doors to the side, the large group of rotting corpses moaned and limped out. Aster started the car. She turned the dial up and loud music poured out of the speakers. The bodies turned their attention from Willow to the loud noise, their legs carrying them to the Jeep. Aster shouted loudly, getting herself hyped up before she changed gears and began down the street stopping every now and then so the rotting corpses could keep up.
Willow whispered a soft prayer hoping their plan had worked. There were a few stragglers as she slipped into the grocery and she easily took care of them.
