Chapter 9

Wendy sat in the passenger seat of Deacon's classy bold blue 2020 Mazda MX-5 Miata. It reminded her of its owner gorgeous and sleek with its defined lines. They both flow seamlessly into their distinctive persona and grasp you with their power.

She tugged at the sleeves of her white shirt before making a huge cuff with the mustard pattern sleeves. Deacon took the time to once again admire the tattoo of a black butterfly of simple lines and curves that rested on the underside of her right elbow. She stared at it for a bit then tugged the sleeve over it as she tried her best to relax.

Deacon after having placed their overnight bags in the trunk had come and placed both their laptop bags on the backseat where a garment bag rested saw as she did this. He silently noted the action but said nothing.

Wendy would have preferred if they had travelled in her car and if she was driving. She would have rather had the opportunity to focus on anything other than the man who was now slipping into the driver's seat.

With his tie and jacket gone to leave behind a black dress shirt with the buttons once again undone a little too far for her peace of mind and a pinstriped black and navy blue dress pants that added to her crazy desire to just sit and stare at him she was a bunch of needy nerves.

To ensure she did not plummet into such an action she took her phone from the breast pocket of her shirt and quickly texted Leela to pray for her with a series of handheld prayer emojis and then called her mother.

"Hey, mum," she said when her mother answered her voice sounding chirpy.

It brought a genuine smile to her lips knowing she was in good spirits.

"Yes, we are," she answered as her mum questioned if they were getting ready to head up.

They chatted a bit more until her mum requested to speak with Deacon who smiled mischievously at her as he took the phone and asked her to type Duncan Cove into the car's GPS.

Her ears struggled to hear what her mother was saying as she put Duncan Cove in the GPS and tried to pick up from Deacon's side of the conversation what was being discussed, but she got nothing. When he handed her the phone she looked at him quizzically but he only smiled and started the car.

When they drove from the underground parking lot Evelyn was stepping out of the elevator to head to her car and the sight of them only increased her aggravation.

If only they had been nicer to her. To think that she always thought Wendy to be a down-to-earth and decent girl but it seemed that the minute she was the boss's main squeeze she got all high and mighty. Deacon Ffrench's arrogance she was already used to.

She would show them that she was not the type to be cast aside. Also, this whirlwind office romance that suddenly materialized did not fool her one bit, something was going on here and she was going to get to the bottom of it and spill the no doubt juicy details.

She knew Deacon Ffrench too well to know that no one hooks his line and sinker. Something was going on.

Was Wendy pregnant? Could that be it? She did a quick estimated calculation and came up with a little over three months if it was to be from the night of the Christmas Party. She however did not show any signs of being or even looking pregnant.

She, however, did not entirely rule out that theory but she would surely make little implications in the right areas to set it spreading.

Over the years being at the Enterprise and moving through various departments she had come to know of a few scandals that went out about the heartthrob Deacon Ffrench Jr.

A few had centred around mistresses conceiving but none had ever allocated them getting so much as an implied commitment of any sort. Something was going on.

Here in a matter of not knowing he was in any way intimate with his PA, they were now very much chartering the course to marriage, this was no coincidence.

What did Wendy Preston know or did that get her from the unknown lover to the soon-to-be Mrs. Deacon Ffrench Jr?

Evelyn who was now sitting in her car stared out at the space where Deacon and Wendy were just minutes before she entered the parking lot. Her mind raced with possibilities as she turned on the ignition and placed her car in drive.

She however did not want possibilities, she wanted hard cold facts that would allow her to sink Wendy Preston and watch as she wished she had not snob her. She smiled at the thought of how sweet it was going to be to watch when whatever it was that propelled her from being the unknown to the talk of the town blew up in her face.

The two occupants of the blue Mazda now heading down the highway did not have Evelyn on their minds. They spent the time discussing various artists that they came to realize they both have a liking for because of Deacon's playlist.

Wendy had to admit she had not expected her to drive to Duncan Cove with Deacon to be fun and relaxing.

They ended up singing along to Prince's Purple Rain as it came on. This leads Wendy to introduce him to both Jeniffer Hudson and Adam Levine's cover of the infamous song and he in return played Etta James's version.

They drove away from the busy city and headed towards the picturesque countryside that would take them to Duncan Cove. The sweet mellow tones offered a tranquil atmosphere that almost had her forgetting the true extent of their relationship and why it was best not to get too carried away.

It felt right though to be with him like this. It was like life was placing circumstances for her to store memories that she would have to hold onto when the fairy tale was over. The time was going to come when the clock was going to strike twelve and Cinderella will have to face reality.

As the song played on to the second verse she let the words drift off her lips as Etta James made lyrical magic.

She closed her eyes and let the next verse seep into her mind. If only there was someone who could guide her through the purple rain when it all came to an end. When the truth surfaced that she was a liar who was going to be left with her to face the bitter music?

When the final line was sung and the notes drifted away Wendy felt the connection take a deeper root in her being and wished that when the Purple rain started to fall she would have her own Prince to guide her along.

Hi again 👋

Evelyn is as bitter as they come, and that bitterness seems like it's going to propel her to cross boundaries that she best leaves alone.😐

Wendy and Deacon are hitting it off better than expected but the test that awaits them is now at hand. Are they both able to convince her family they are the perfect couple she depicted months ago?🤔
