Preston Manor Sunday evening.
Deacon came into the room a few minutes behind Wendy and found her standing by the window her arms wrapped around her waist hugging herself tightly as if trying to hold something deep within so that it could not break free.
He locked the door and walked up to her gently touching her shoulder as he resisted the urge to pull her into his body and hold her there.
"Hey?" he said softly the one word conveying his concern.
"Hey," she said back her voice bearly above a whisper hoarse with emotion.
He stood behind her not sure where to begin. He was never one to handle emotional situations he was more centred around being authoritative; being definite in his ways offered him the presidency to remain in control and broke no standard in where he stood.
Also, whatever emotional distress he might have faced growing up his father made sure to wipe them clean from him with his selfishness and ensured he always kept the slate clean he drilled in him 'To make it in this life you persevere on the wit of steel'.
He had to fight to remain steadfast in seeing to it he gave his father what he wanted and in return, he was made into an emotionless man centred on nothing but making his company strive.
Cold, arrogant and bitter were only a few of the choice words that defined him. However, he realized more now that he was far from being that cold and aloof businessman or the heartless man who strived to keep his life on a degree of freedom to claim his dominance over his life.
So much had changed about him in the few days he and Wendy had been here in Duncan Cove. He had never let anyone this close to him to care about their feelings and well-being other than Kylie and Lionel, but now all he wanted was to release himself in the need to love, care and cherish the downcast beauty beside him.
"I have to tell Mum the truth," she said her voice trembling as she spoke. "I can't keep lying to the persons I love."
"If that's what you desire to do go ahead," he told her hating himself for being so selfish at the beginning.
He had at first thought sleeping with Wendy would cure him of his obsession and save him and Kylie from a marriage that would tangle them in its bitter web.
"What about your father and your friend?" she asked and he could see that she was torn between doing right by all of them.
He did not resist his need to embrace her this time. He hugged her to him and let the feel of her against him fill him with tranquillity. He loved her enough to know that it was her happiness and comfort that mattered. He cared about her far more than the lie that led to them being here and the compromise did not matter as much as his love for her.
He felt his heart beat with all his love as she clung to him as she was relieved that he was not going to demand that they stick to the concession and not break the terms of their agreement. He held her as close as he could thinking that whatever it took he was going to ensure that Wendy was happy.
"Whatever you want from me all you have to do is ask," he told her. "I don't want you to think you're bound to this farce because as much as it pleases me to finally be with you after four years of lusting and going crazy with my need to have you, I love you far more Wendy."
There he said it. He said the most beautiful thing in the world and he was happy he said it. He felt her body stiffen in his arms and she took a surprised gasp. He waited for her to let his words be fully comprehended as he marvelled at how wonderful his declaration made him feel.
"You love me?" he heard her finally ask after what seemed like hours of just holding her.
He looked at her as she shifted so that she could look at him, her eyes searched his intently. It was there in the depths of his mesmerising grey eyes that what he said was true. It had always been evident but his past livity had been on the forefront overshadowing his true feelings and keeping them away from what had always been.
He smiled at her thinking of occasions where his life revealed to him how he truly felt about the woman that sent his blood boiling in more ways than one. There had been that time when he had thought Lee was her lover and had been pumped full of jealousy when he had heard her talking to her supposed lover. He had ensured that she was kept at the office with him way past the time for their scheduled date.
It had filled him with childish delight when he had overheard her sending a quick voice note telling who he had thought to be her lover that they would not be able to meet again tonight. Also, he had flipped out completely when that morning she had turned up to work flustered and looking like someone thoroughly ravished by a lover.
He was like a wounded lion being pricked in its injury making everyone walk on eggshells fearing they should aggravate him further. He had thought some other man had ravished her in ways he only dreamed of when all he wanted to do was feast himself upon the sensual woman who had him in more circumstances than he cared to admit burning with an unsatiated need.
He had later that day when he found her to be sick with the flu succumbed with delight that it was not some other man that had her weak and flustered. He had personally taken her to her apartment after stacking her up on vitamins and chicken soup. Later that day he had asked Kylie to send her lover to check in on her.
He could no longer deny that his reaction to other women leaving him miserable and repulsed by the very reason that brought them into his life- sex and convenience- was him wanting Wendy in ways he could not have her, and he always got what he wanted.
As to him pleasuring himself when he had women willingly available to relieve his frustrations, as well as the many cold showers that did nothing for his need to claim her in the most intimate of fashions was just the need to have her in his bed and rid himself of his craving lust.
These mixed moods and his craving for her were pent-up sexual desires of a man who was rarely denied anything, it was nothing more.
These were all lies just shallow conveniences to shy away from the truth. He had always been in love with Wendy. His possessiveness, his jealousy of her being and belonging to someone else, or the way she dominated the one thing he pledged never to give to anyone- his heart, and his desire to be with her in terms and ways that he would not dream of giving any other woman was his clarity all along.
"I love you, Wendy Ann Preston, and have been in love with you for the past four years," he answered his declaration true and very much real.
He watched the shock and then the pure joy that took its place on her beautiful face as her lips spread in a wide smile of pure happiness and without a minute to spare claimed those lips as he knew that she too cared for him. That his loving her was not just a one-sided affair.
Wendy loved him too. He saw it clear in her eyes, he felt it in her returned kiss and when they pulled apart to catch their breath she said, "I love you too," he knew he was now free.
He was no longer bound to the wretched life that his father had instigated so brutally from his childhood and had him fighting to break free from all his adult life.
He kissed her more gently this time and held her to him wanting nothing more in the world than to love her and have her love him.
