Evelyn's apartment.

Elizabeth watched as Evelyn buttered a scone and placed the knife by the plate. She took a sip of her tea and tried not to give in to the nervousness that increased her agitation. She had to do this right if she wanted to get away from the crazed woman whose vendetta was no doubt stemming from an occasion that had long since been influenced by time and various activities in her psychotic mind.

As Evelyn bit down into the scone she took one of the fluffy pastries glazed with honey and felt her stomach churn as she reached for the knife. Her heart raced like a runaway tram train as her fingers curled around the cool steel. She willed herself to look more concerned with the golden brown scone she was about to butter.

She raised the knife to the butter dish and pretended to dip the tip into the soft creamy butter. Her heart flipped when Evelyn shifted and the knife almost slipped from her nervous fingers.

"I am so happy I saw you at the club, just think how wonderful fate is putting us together so that we can give Deacon the love he deserves," Evelyn said as she smiled with a warmth that denied the madness raging in her. "Girls like Wendy Preston are just too high-minded for their good."

Elizabeth quickly bit down into the scone to not verbally respond to her but it seemed that Evelyn expected her to converse on the matter so she quickly swallowed the scone but she was wrong because Evelyn continued to speak her expressions ranging from anger to full-blown glee.

"I placed them together last Christmas you know. I saw something there and gave them a nudge in the right direction but she got way above her head thinking she was better than me because she now has Deacon.

I showed her alright. I showed her that I could be her Guardian Angel as well as an Avenging Demon. I wish I could see the look on her face when she sees you throwing up and knowing it's Deacon's baby."

Elizabeth stared at the woman who laughed with outright happiness at what she thought to be one of her greatest accomplishments. She was surprised to see that she was genuinely convinced that all she did was teach Wendy a lesson and help her.

What could have caused her to be so twisted in her views, to be so centred on what ought to be done following what she saw fit? It scared her to know that she was so easily swayed by people and their responses to her that she twisted the odds in the favour of someone whom she saw fit.

Evelyn was like a mad scientist creating a perfect world for his twisted creations. She needed to get out now and ensure Evelyn was stopped before she hurt someone to fit into the deranged plot of justice she thinks she deserves from those who treat her less than she thought she should be treated.

"Would you like some more tea?" she asked reaching for the pot.

Before Evelyn could answer are be made fully aware of what was about to happen she swung hard the teapot sending the hot contents spilling on them both.

Evelyn's surprised and hurt-filled scream fills the room and propels her into further action driving away any fear as adrenaline pumps into her. A screeching Evelyn reeled from her chair only to fall on the floor as she slipped in the spilt tea.

Hurridly she went limping to the door her lips parted on a cry for help with the knife clutched in her hand. It came out as choked-filled sobs as she reached for the handle and rattled it. Tears ran down her cheeks as she wrestled with the locked door. As she made another attempt to scream for help she heard a female voice calling out in agitation for Evelyn to open the door.

Evelyn who was still dazed wobbled to her feet and Elizabeth screamed through the door for the stranger she hoped to be a saviour to call the police as she and Evelyn had been injured. She feared telling her the truth might lead to a failure in her not getting the help she sought as she did not know exactly who was on the other side.

"What?!" the voice said in shock as she tried to turn the knob from the outside.

"Please hurry get help call the police," she screamed hitting the door. "Please hurry!"

Elizabeth felt Evelyn's hands wrap themselves around her neck from behind and squeeze with frenzied madness as she pulled her from the door. As the hard fingers pressed into her neck she angled the knife and sent it into the raged-filled woman's side.

The shocked Evelyn staggered from her and Elizabeth coughed violently as she tried to catch her breath. She turned to see Evelyn looking down in a daze at her side where the knife had embedded itself through the sheer white shirt she wore to pierce her side, as a huge dark spot began to form on the white shirt Elizabeth staggered back to the door pounding on it screaming hysterically.

She screamed more as she heard running feet and the now-familiar voice of the woman barking at someone to hurry. A jingle of keys and the sound of the door being unlocked had Elizabeth now down to a relieved sob. She cried out as the door opened and she was faced with a rotund figure clad in grey pants, a white shirt with a light grey thin tie and a woman who slightly resembled Evelyn around the eyes staring at her in dismay.

The woman who was heavily pregnant with brown eyes looked at her in fright and when she stepped into the apartment and looked down at Evelyn who had slumped to the floor in a dead faint she whispered.

"Evie, what have you gone and done again?"

The woman walked over to Evelyn and looked down at her as she fumbled in her bag for a cell phone and quickly retrieved her husband's number and said shakily when he picked up.

"Brandon it's Evelyn. You need to get here now."

Elizabeth whose intent was to get away from the apartment did not wait to stick around. She heard the woman instructing the shocked apartment manager to call an ambulance on a harsh command as she rushed as fast as she could to the elevator. She felt her body shake violently as the past day's events clouded her mind. After selecting the button to the lobby she wrapped her hands around her body and bit her lips as she thought how close she came to losing a life she should have appreciated.

When she staggered out into the empty lobby her first thought was to rush to the door and out to freedom but instead, she turned to the vacant reception area grabbed the phone she saw there and dialled a number hoping she hadn't received a second chance in life only to be left without the one thing she truly wanted.

"Hello," a familiar voice answered after the fourth ring.

"Conrad," she sobbed as the sound of sirens and the wail of an ambulance marred the silence of the apartment lobby. "Am so sorry baby. I love you so much."

"Where are you, Lizzy?" he asked and her heart slumped when he did not respond in kind.

She looked around then said softly, "I'll see you at County Central Hospital."

She hung up the phone as she heard him begin to ask questions and then turned around to face the door which was now being pushed open by a paramedic wheeling a mobile bed her eyes blurred and she crumbled to the floor in a haze of darkness.
