"Dont worry my love, I'll call you later so you can come over for our movie marathon," I smiled through the phone.
"Okay, I love you too."
Once I hung up with Elena, the doorbell rang almost immediately. Lazily, I dragged my legs to the front door, getting ready to give that person a piece of my mind for coming at midnight.
"Do you not realize it's midni-"
"Jack!" A high pitched squeal came out of her mouth.
I instinctively covered my ears with my hands while shutting my eyes closed, not used to such a loud scream. After I knew it was safe for me to remove my hands, I did so. It was too good to be true, so I just stood there blinking my eyes a few times before regaining my composure.
"Emery?" I asked dubiously.
"Well don't just stand there and act like you don't know me," she rolled her eyes with a playful smile.
Within seconds my arms wrapped themselves tightly around her waist as she let out a small laugh. Six years. It's been six years since I've seen Emery. After I pull back, I take this moment to really look at her. Not only did she grow about a foot, but her pixie cut hair was now in loose waves resting a little past her shoulders and not to mention, her figure.
Emery was never the skinniest girl in middle school but she always had the kind of face that would make you forget about her body. The five foot, petite girl standing in front of me was not the way I remember my best friend since second grade.
"Eyes up here Jack," she whistled.
"Oh shut up," I laughed, trying to play off the fact that she caught me staring at her.
"That's no way to treat your best friend that flew all the way from Canada to come see you," she crossed her arms over her chest, "Which by the way, thanks for completely forgetting about me at the airport. I had to take four cabs just to get here, the middle of no where," she said, all in one breath.
"I know I'm so sorry. I totally forgot, I'm sorry Em," I pouted with puppy dog eyes.
"Don't look at me like that, you know how much I hate your puppy look," she smiled, and looked away.
I stood there glued to my spot, without moving a muscle. She knew I wasn't gonna move until she forgave me. We used to do that as kids, I would play my puppy dog face and she would stand there, looking away from me until she would finally give in and forgive me.
"Okay fiiiinee, I forgive you, just stop looking at me like that," she laughed.
" I knew you couldn't stay mad at me," finding warmth in those familiar green eyes.
Instead of saying something, Emery simply stuck her tongue out at me and marched toward the kitchen and began raiding my pantry. After three minutes of hopelessly looking for food, Emery let out a puff of air and rolled her eyes.
"Don't you eat anything Jack?"
"Yes I do as a matter of fact, I just haven't had time to go grocery shopping," I sighed.
" Why don't you go upstairs and shower, and I'll order us some pizza and we'll watch movies," I added with a smile.
"Ok, but you do realize it's midnight, so you're gonna have stay up and not leave me hanging right?" she asked with uncertainty.
