CHAPTER 5
“You really are growing up, aren’t you?” Ji-hyun said finally.
I felt relief flush through me and I nodded.
“But I still need your support. I still need your friendship.”
Teuk pulled me into a hug. “And you know you always have. We’ll always be there for you, no matter what, you know that. I’ll miss you being here, but I wish you all the luck in the world. I’m proud of you.”
She punched my shoulder playfully, but her mature words reminded me that she was two years older and a grade higher than me.
“Forget it!” A sharp voice rang through our sentimental moment.
We both looked at Ae Cha. Her shocked expression had morphed into a glare and her hands were balled into fists.
“You wanna ditch us, you go right ahead, that’s your choice. But if you leave, I’ll never speak to you again!”
I stared at her. I’d never seen her act this way before and it took me totally by surprise.
“Ae Cha…”
“No, shut up! If you’re going, go, but don’t expect a goodbye from me.”
“But Ae Cha, I don’t want to you lose you. Can’t you understand, I need—“
I walked toward her, but she pushed me aside.
“Go away! I don’t want to talk about this anymore. I hate you!”
She ran past me and out of the dorm.
“Ae Cha! Ae Cha, wait!” I started to go after her, but Ji-hyun stopped me.
“Don’t. I’ll go get her. You know how she can get.”
“Ya, but she’s never done that before! How can I leave with her like this?”
Ji-hyun gave me a stern look. “Don’t you pay any attention to the way she’s acting. She’s being selfish. If you feel like you need to go, then follow your heart. Ae Cha will get over it, you’ll see.”
And with that she left the room as well. I suddenly felt alone. Very alone.
Ae Cha kept her word by not talking to me—at all. It was quite depressing. How could she be so immature? I wasn’t leaving her forever. I was just moving a few miles away. Why didn’t she get that? Why didn’t she get that I needed this job? Ji-hyun sort of kept us apart so that there was no chance for an argument. She continued encouraging me and attempted consoling Ae Cha. She was sort of caught in the middle, trying to mend things. It didn’t seem to be working…
The next day, I e-mailed Yunho.
Hey Yunho
It’s Sun-hi. Remember me? From the club yesterday? Do you still need to hire a maid? I would like to take the job. I need it and I’m grateful to you for offering it to me. Please get back to me soon.
Thanks!
Sun-hi
It didn’t take long for him to get back to me. A few hours later, I got an e-mail.
Hi Sin-hi!
That’s great! Of course we still want to hire you! But don’t think of yourself as a maid. Think of it more as…a “mother”. We’re hiring you as our mother
