CHAPTER 30
Finally, the doctor came out to speak to us. “Aside from the usual cuts and bruises, he’s suffered some mildly fractured bones—his leg and two ribs. He’s going through a blood transfusion to replace all the blood he lost from the wound on his head. He’s also suffered some massive head trauma. That is not to say his situation is hopeless, but first things first. He needs to wake up. If he doesn’t come out of the coma…then there’s nothing we can do for him.”
“What we do now?” I wanted to know.
“Talk to him. He may still be able to hear you. Encourage him, bring him back. Remind he’s not alone and he needs to fight for his life.”
I almost said, That’s it? But I didn’t. I thought it, though. The other four guys and I were led to Changmin’s room, but Ji-hyun and Ae Cha stayed behind, promising to wait for me for as long as it takes. I was the most grateful I’d ever been for having such great friends.
I could hardly bare to see Changmin as he was. Not knowing how he was supposed to be. Happy and smiling and cheerful and energetic. Upbeat and laughing. Not hooked up to a bunch of machines by tubes and wires to keep him alive because his own body couldn’t do it for him. Not banged up and bandaged, lying still with his eyes close, yet unsleeping. I wanted to call out to him. I wanted to shake him until he woke up. I wanted him to open his eyes and speak to me, to let me know he was alright. But he didn’t. He just lay there, letting a machine breath for him. Oh, Changmin…how could something like this happen to you? I was the first one to walk up to the side of his bed and take his hand. I didn’t realize my tears had escaped until one of them hit my arm. The others surrounded his bed and he just looked at him.
I sniffed and cleared my throat. “We should say something so he can hear us.”
Yunho touched his arm. “I believe in you, Changmin. You’ll find a way to wake up. You have to. We love you and love is a powerful force. It will bring you back, one way or another.”
Yoochun was holding his other hand. “How can we be Dong Bang Shin Ki without you? Only four doesn’t work. We need all five. We need you. So you can leave us. You’re not allowed.”
“Please get better soon, Hyung.” Junsu said next. “I know you can do this. You’re very strong and I know you won’t give up. Your fans would be very angry with you if you did.”
After him was Jaejoong. “It was scary to see you in your car like that, but I won’t be afraid for you anymore. Instead, I’ll believe that you’ll pull through. Because you mean too much to us not to. And who’s going to eat all of Sun-hi’s leftovers if you’re not here?”
I forced myself to smile, to appear strong despite my tears.
“Changmin…you have to wake up.” I shook my finger at him. “Because I said so and I’m your “mother”. And…I have something very important I have to tell you someday. So you have to be around to hear it.”
The manager was the last one to say something, “Changmin, somehow your heart, and the hearts of everyone who cares so much for you, will bring you back. Just don’t take too long, ok? We’re all counting on you.”
Nothing happened—not that we really expected anything to happen… We just stood there and watching, feeling helpless to do anything to but talk to some we didn’t feel was even listening. But the doctor said he could hear. He had to know how much we loved him and wanted him to do his best to wake up.
