CHAPTER 31
He wasn’t dying, I had to remind myself, just sleeping so deeply that waking up was taking a lot longer than normal. I had been a week and a half and nothing had happened. He hadn’t move a muscle or made a single sound. I was so ready to lose hope, but something deep inside kept my faith alive and I kept holding on for dear life.
“The doctor wants us to let you go. I can’t do that. I don’t care if you have to stay like forever; I’m not letting them do that to you. You have to wake up sometime.” I was beginning to feel crazy. Like I was talking to myself. “You still have to show me that cool new video game you were talking about. You must be awfully hungry by now too… There are lots of prayers being offered for you every day. No one’s losing hope—not a single one.” My thumb brushed back and forth across the back of his hand. “Would it make you feel better if I told you all the things I like about you? You’re cute… charming… smart… witty… tall… quiet, reserved, good-humored, sarcastic, quirky, sensitive…mature…cool… And I cherish and love you more than I’m afraid you will ever know. I promise that if you wake up, I’ll never hide that from you ever again. I promise you…”
I looked up suddenly. The other four members and the manager was in the waiting room, not that I was worry about being by myself or anything, but I had the strangest urge to bring them into the room. I didn’t follow the urge. I stayed put, refusing to leave Changmin, even to get the others for whatever reason. Then the hand that I had held for six hours at time—the hand that had been hopelessly still—moved. It twitched. My head shot up from where it was resting on the edge of the bed. It’s just your imagination, Sun-hi. Probably your own hand twitching. Don’t get your hopes up. Still, I stared at his face. It looked different somehow. There was more color to it. It looked less…lifeless. Then his hand moved again, and this time it wasn’t just a twitch. His fingers moved and brushed across my hand, making my skin tingle. I jumped and scooted closer
“Changmin?”
He face moved ever so slightly, like he was about to wake up from a long nap and it was hard to open his eyes. His hand squeezed mine back and my heart skipped a beat. His head turned side to side. He was waking up! He was really waking up! Which meant he was going to be ok! Everything was going to be ok!
“Changmin!”
His eyes fluttered opened—oh, those wonderful eyes—and his blinked a few times as his vision adjusted. He pulled of his respirator.
“Sun-hi? Am I in a hospital?”
I nodded. “Ya, you were in a car accident. But you’re ok now…” I stroked his face.
“How do you feel?”
“Hungry!” I laughed. “And a little dizzy. I think I have a headache…”
“Well, I’ll bring you some food right away.” He smiled thankfully at me and I helped him sit up. “You have two ribs broken, so be careful, ok?”
He looked closely into my eyes. “Have you been crying? Your eyes are so red… Did I cause that much worry?”
I smiled—this time tears of relief appearing—and shook my head, brushing his hair out of his face.
“No, it’s not your fault, don’t worry. You’re fine now and that’s all that matters, I’m very happy now.”
A tear slipped down my face and he reached out to wipe it away. I almost told him right then and there how much I loved him. But I couldn’t. There was something else I had to do before I did that.
