CHAPTER 15

Knock, knock, knock

“Sun-hi?” Called Yoochun’s voice. “Will you come out? Please?”

I stood up and opened the door. “Sorry, Yoochun. I shouldn’t have slammed the door like that.

“It’s ok. Can we talk?” He motioned down the hall to where everyone else was waiting for me.

I looked at them, suddenly very embarrassed, backing farther into my room so they wouldn’t see me. How could I face them now, after I’d acted so childish? What did they think of me now? Yoochun took my hand.

“Come on, it’ll be ok.”

“Ya.” Yunho came up behind him. “We have to work this out together—like a family.”

He was right, so I agreed with a nod and his inviting smile lured me out of my room and down the hall, where they all sat in the living room. I sat down in what had somehow been designated as my chair, keeping my head down.

“I want to say something first.” I ventured. “I’m sorry I yelled. That was wrong of me and I didn’t mean to. I was just…upset…”

I looked up, at Changmin first, then Jaejoong, then Junsu. Gosh, why was this so hard to say? Because I was so embarrassed? Because I couldn’t read their faces?

I continued. “But I want you to know, I don’t just…see myself as your maid. I know I did at first but… You’ve shown me that I’m more than that to you. In the short time I’ve known you, I’ve come to feel like you’re my family now.”

They all smiled at me like brothers smile at a sister and that was when I really become DBSK’s “mother”.

Then I added, “But I don’t want to leave. Whatever’s wrong with Ae Cha, she’ll get over it eventually. Please don’t make me move out.”

Jaejoong, Changmin, and Junsu looked at each other.

“It’s ok, we forgive you.” Junsu said with a smile that was like cold water on a hot day. “We’re glad that you’re part of this “family”.”

Then Changmin said, “We don’t want you to think we were taking your friend’s side against you. It’s just that we feel for her.” He glanced at Jaejoong. “We don’t want you to go either. We just want to make sure you’re doing the right thing.”

“But isn’t that for me to decided?” I pointed out. “I am doing the right thing. I belong here.”
I almost placed my hand over my mouth. I had always thought it, but saying it out aloud…sounded like a confession. They all smiled at me.

“Ok then, then please stay.” Jaejoong said to me. I gave him a smile. “We know you don’t love your friend any less by choosing to stay with us, but—“

I nodded. “I know. I should visit them more. I’ll find the time, I promise. But…to tell you the truth…” I looked away. “I don’t know if I can. Ae Cha’s so mad at me. I avoid her to avoid getting hurt. She pretends I’ve never been born, or if she doesn’t, she says something really nasty to me. If I can’t reach her, then shouldn’t I just leave her alone?”

“Wouldn’t that be like giving up on her?”

I stared at Yunho. I didn’t want to admit it, but he was right. I would rather give up on Ae Cha than risk getting hurt by her again. I pressed my lips together.
