Song of the chapter:
Talking Body by Tove Lo
__________"I honestly couldn't believe it! If you would have told me twenty-four hours ago that Colton-fucking-Tucker was interested in me, I would have laughed in your face," Anna swooned, wrapping her lips around her spoonful of peanut butter. Her long hair cascaded over the side of her bed as she lay on her back and indulged in the entire jar. It wasn't fair. She could literally eat whatever she wanted and it wouldn't effect her at all. She would always brag about her quick metabolism, but I would just roll my eyes with envy. If I had her eating habits, I'd have to work out for at least three hours per day to maintain her figure.
Chuckling, I shook my head and leaned back against the headboard of her bed. It was the following night, Saturday night, and neither of us had plans. Any time that happened, we would hang out and watch movies. But in that moment sitting on her bed, I was sure the only thing on the agenda for the night was hearing about the party the night before and about how "Colton-fucking-Tucker" asked her to hang out after school on Wednesday.
"Why do I have a feeling he just wants you to blow him?" I teased.
Her head snapped up and her mouth turned into an "o" shape. Suddenly, she didn't look so shocked at my words anymore and her eyes were smoldering. "You're probably right. And I'm okay with that."
I shrugged my shoulders and she laughed, knowing I respected her honesty. The whole idea of girls owning their bodies and loving their bodies and being proud of their bodies and choosing what they'd like to do with them was something I was very passionate about. I didn't take any part in shaming a girl for liking sex. After all, I was friends with Anna.
"This is why we're friends," she said with a mouthful of peanut butter. "You're totally for my decisions."
"I'm not for them. I respect them," I corrected her.
She didn't even have to look at me for me to know that she was rolling her eyes. Anna had heard me say that many, many times before.
My smile faded and I looked down at my hands, remembering just how much they were trembling the night before when I encountered Justin Bieber. I had no idea if I came off as calm, but I sure as hell didn't feel like it. After I shoved my hands into my jacket pockets, I could feel them shaking at my sides.
Though I didn't want to, I found myself thinking about Justin a lot that day. Not in a way that Anna was thinking about Colton, but just in general. I wondered why he was so demanding about coffee, why he insisted on not leaving, and why he chose my family's diner in the first place. I had never seen him in there before, so it made absolutely no sense as to why he wanted one from us so badly. It wasn't like he had an amazing experience there before.
I hadn't told Anna about it, but it was nearly impossible for me to hold it in. So not long after she brought up Colton, I decided to spill.
"So, you'll never guess what happened to me last night," I taunted.
"Hm, let me guess. Let me guess!" Anna sat up straight, pulling her spoon out of her mouth. "You ran out of ketchup at the diner and people threw a fit because they didn't have anything to dip their french fries in and they ended up rioting against the restaurant and they burned the entire place to the ground!"
As if it was an instinct, I slapped her on the arm and laughed. "God, you're such an asshole."
Her laugh was maniacal. "Okay, tell me what happened."
"You already guessed it."
"Kennedy, come on!"
"Okay!" I tucked my hair behind my ear. "Last night I was cleaning up at the diner by myself and I heard someone come in and of course I was like, 'What the hell? Who's the stupid ass that doesn't know what a closed sign means?' So anyways, I turn around and guess who was there!"
