You by the 1975
__________I went home shortly after, hoping that Justin would think I was as pretty as I felt. Never was I one to dress simply to please others, of course. But who was I hurting trying to impress someone I really liked? There was no harm in it.
My parents were both home when I arrived, meaning I was going to have to lie about where I was going. Justin already knew to park a little farther away to avert any suspicion, but it was a matter of whether or not I could make up a convincing story as to where I was going— alone, may I add— on a Friday night.
Of course, my parents were very trusting of me. It was only because I never really did anything wrong for them not to trust me in the first place. They didn't always ask questions as to where I went or who I was going with or how long I was going to be there. They weren't the "helicopter" parents that everyone else seemed to have. I had earned their trust over the years of sitting at home, doing homework, and working at the little family diner. I was the good, respectful, quiet daughter that was every parents' dream.
When I walked inside, I saw the both of them at the dinner table. My mom was filling a glass of wine out of a dark bottle, and my dad was flipping through the mail.
"Hi, guys," I called on my way in, knowing right away that they were going to ask me why I was dressed the way I was. Although it was shocking, Anna didn't dress me inappropriately, but I didn't normally wear the clothes I had on. I knew it would raise questions.
"Hi, honey," my mom called. She looked up at me, her eyes blinking rapidly. "Wow, you look nice."
I smiled, taking a seat next to her. Her comment won me a look from my dad, who raised his eyebrows before mindlessly looking back at the stack of envelopes on the table. "Where are you off to?" he asked.
"Well," I started, shrugging. "Anna and I are going out to dinner with some friends in our study group. It's kind of like a little break from all of the work we've been doing."
Wow, I thought. Not bad.
"That should be fun," my mom said before taking a sip from her glass, the red from the wine tinting her top lip before she licked it away. "Do you need a ride?"
"No," I shook my head. "I'm getting picked up."
That's not exactly a lie, I thought in an attempt to make myself feel better for what I was doing.
My eyes looked towards the kitchen stove, noticing it was 5:58. I had not received a text from Justin indicating that he left or arrived, but I was sure he was going to let me know when the time came.
Light conversation filled the room as I waited. Between the three of us, we talked about school, work, and Paulina's wedding that was rapidly approaching. Still, I hadn't told my parents that I planned to take Justin rather than Anna, but I knew that time would come faster than I wanted. They still didn't even know that Justin existed, let alone I was seeing him behind their backs.
"They want everyone to wear their wedding colors," my mom said mockingly, rolling her eyes in the process. "Apparently, if your outfit doesn't have sage green in it, you're out."
My dad scoffed. "Since when did she become so pretentious? She was begging me to clean the bathroom floors for extra money not even two weeks ago, and now she wants to talk about wedding dress code specifics? Unreal."
I laughed, loving the sarcastic banter between the two of them. They were absolutely right, though. Paulina was never one to act so ritzy until she married a rich man. Then again, I was happy for her. Throughout all of the hardships life threw at her, she deserved a break— a big one.
