No P.O.V.
David paced around his cabin, extremely worried. One day a few weeks ago, Dolf had been getting bullied a lot by Nurf and wanted to be alone at the lake. He had told David that he would just sit there for a bit until he calmed down, but was the last time any of them saw him. The red head left towards the lake to search again...while Gwen made sure all the campers knew not to go near the lake in case there was something dangerous lurking within the waters. Of course; David once more came back into the camp late and empty handed. Gwen had always joked about the paperwork for a dead camper, but in full honesty both councilors were deeply worried and disturbed. Both wondered what could have happened. Did he fall in? Possible but the edge was shallow and Dolf knew how to swim. Did an animal attack him? Again, possible; but unlikely as no one had heard anything. Did Daniel come back and kidnap and/or kill him? They couldn't be sure. There was no trace of him, the small camper was just gone. Meanwhile, Max sat on the ground as Gwen lectured the group, not listening. Why would he; what did he have to be afraid of? Absolutely nothing.
A few days later Max sat on a dock by himself. Neil walked over to the boy and sat next to him as well. "We're not supposed to be by the water," he reminded, "what're you doing over here anyway?" Max bit back an annoyed huff and let out a small laugh. "Since when did I listen to Gwen? I'm just getting away from everything for a bit. And hey-if somethin comes over and kills me then it's still a win for me." He added a small joking shrug making Neil frown but chuckle. "True," was his response. The taller boy looked out onto the water, it looked so nice on such a hot day like this one, but being the ball of nerves he was, he didn't dare go into the murky water. "Well I'll at least stay with you, make sure nothing happens," he nudged the younger's side lightly earning Max sticking out his tongue playfully. The two had taken an instant liking to each other when they had first met 4 years ago, but had waited on officially "dating" cause it felt weird with how young they had been. Not that it mattered, not like anyone knew. Not like anything changed between the boys.
The raven haired boy smiles to himself, liking the feeling of knowing Neil cared. But once again felt himself swallow a huff. He was hungry. Very hungry. He would have to wait for now, he could go a bit longer. Max leaned his head on Neil's shoulder, sighing, at least it was calming. He did this often, Neil knew, and now the taller would sit with the other every day at the dock. Max liked the time he got to spend with his boyfriend alone, he really did, but it was starting to annoy him. He regretted thoughts that temped him to pull the boy into the water and get his fill, but one look at Neil reminded Max that he would never be able to do that, he would rather starve to death. The small teen lay awake on his cot staring at the ceiling. His stomach growled quietly. It was so hot. The boy knew he had to find an excuse to sneak away before anyone noticed how hungry he was. Sure the food here had helped a little, but Max really didn't try his luck with eating much of it, not that it would keep him full anyway. The last time it did was when Gwen and the Quartermaster had stolen food for culture day and Max got all the meat he wanted. His mouth watered at that thought, urging to get out of bed and cool off in the very inviting water.
But surely, no one would be awake this late. That trip would only be in vain and fuel his growing crave. Sweat stuck to his forehead as he laid there awake, unable to sleep and only able to think about food. Finally, Max pushed himself off the hot fabric and walked out of the tent, he couldn't take it anymore. Even if he had to play dirty he needed to eat. Max walked back to the water like he did many times looking into the dark ripples. A while ago he had fibbed that he didn't know how to swim, while he now internally cursed himself for not being able to come up with a better excuse on the spot. Sure the other campers had kept that "secret" for this long, but if David ever learned there would be no way to get out of those damn swimming lessons. Then everything would be over. Max shuddered a bit despite the humidity, not even wanting to picture what would happen if and when the others would find out. He shook it off for now and shrugged off his hoodie and shoes. He didn't necessarily like to strip like this, but then again it made it much easier to not look suspicious when he got back out.
