This takes place when Max is 13 (Nikki also 13, Neil is 14)

Max's P.O.V.

"Max!!! Open the door!" Nikki yelled as she continuously pounded on the door. "I'm coming god d*mnit!" I yelled back while I quickly pulled a black and white striped hoodie on while jogging to the door. Immediately after opening it, Nikki instantly grabbed my arm and dragged my out. "Hold on-hold on! Let me lock up first, jeez!" She let go and gave an apologetic glance. "David's not home right now and he'd definitely be up my *ss if the door was left open," I said waltz locking the door. "Sorry...," she mumbled, rubbing the back of her neck, "I'm just excited is all!" I huffed, rolling my eyes playfully and letting her drag me the rest of the way to her car. "I wish you wouldn't make such a big deal out of this...," I said after a few minutes of driving. "Oh, come on! Aren't you even a little eager to see what Preston and Erid pick out for Neil?" I nodded hesitantly after a few moments that put a smirk on Nikki's face that made me really want to smack it. I shot my third to worst pair of eye daggers at her which was enough to wipe it right off and make her look forward. I chuckled to myself and dropped the daggers. "Why are you so excited anyway, I thought you didn't like getting all fancied up?" I teased.

Nikki huffed and shook her head, "I don't like being forced to get all 'fancied up'. Besides, we're all gonna go and have a good time. I try to think of it as dressing up in costumes to make it less vomit inducing." She giggled slightly as she said the last part. "Plus, I'm more excited about picking out an outfit for you. I bet you're more against this than anyone else." Ugh. Dressing up. I shuddered. I hope Preston doesn't make me wear a bow-tie, those are so 20 years ago. "You sound like Sasha," I made fun, sticking my tongue out. She gasped in fake offence, "How dare!" I am so gonna put her in the preppiest dress I can find. I sat back and waited for us to arrive to our destination. The mall. The last dance of 8th grade was tonight and Nikki and Preston somehow convinced me to go. It would be my first, and last middle school dance and they wanted to make it extra special for everyone. How the f*ck did they get me roped into this? Though, if was being completely honest, I was curious to what they'd put Neil in. My face darkened. We finally got there and Nikki hopped out of the car. "Come on, hurry up! We got a lot to do." Yea, yea.

Neil's P.O.V.

"Oh come on!" I yelled as Preston shoved yet another pair of tight looking dress pants in my face. I threw them back at him in annoyance, "I am not wearing that!" He huffed at me. "Do you want to look at least somewhat decent tonight? You've rejected everything I've picked out for you," Preston placed the garment back on the shelf and crossed his arms. "Get better style," I retorted blatantly, Thank you Max for practice on comebacks. "Burn," Erid called from a close by isle. Preston shook his head, rolling his eyes, "Fine, you can do this yourself, and don't come crawling back cause I'm not helping you anymore." "Oh no," was all I replied with a smirk. He can be very over-dramatic but he'll get over it. I sighed as my mind returned to the task at hand. How the hell did Nikki convince me-especially Max-to go along with this? My mind wandered to what Max might end up wearing and my face rose significantly in temperature. I cleared my throat and looked around, trying to focus once more. A black and yellow plaid dress shirt stuck out to me so i grabbed it to try on.

I found Preston helping Erid finding a nice shirt to wear since she refused to go anywhere near a dress. She was holding a dark blue rippled shirt in one hand, a magenta and orange faded long sleeved one in the other. Preston stood across from her, hand on his chin, seemingly lost in thought. I was kind of just glancing around while I approached them, my eyes landing on something I knew Preston would absolutely love. It was a  sage button up overcoat paired with a brown and purple wool sweater. I quickly grabbed one off the rack, hiding it behind my back and continuing up to them. "I think...I like the navy one better...," Preston said as I stepped next to him. I nodded in agreement. I cleared my throat to get Preston's attention and when he looked at me I held out the outfit. He stared in awe for a moment before squealing. I swear his eyes literally had stars in them. "I'm gonna try this on quick," I said pointing with my thumbs to the nearby dressing room and grabbing a random pair of basil khaki-like pants. I chuckled slightly wondering how much luck Max was having trying to get Nikki into something even mildly appropriate. He's probably had to drag her just to get her into the store.
