There are many types of fear, and there are many things to be afraid of. However, many of the things we say we are afraid of are wrong. You aren't afraid of spiders, you're afraid of them biting you, or of how they look. You aren't afraid of the dark, you're afraid of what's in it. You aren't afraid of heights, you're afraid of falling. I'm not afraid of the text message Aaron just sent me, I'm afraid of what's going to happen because of it.
To: Aaron
about what?Just then, my phone started ringing. It was Aaron.
"I'll be right back," I said to Madi as I went to my room.
Once inside, I closed the door and answered.
"Hello?" I said, shakily.
"I think we've gotta talk for a few minutes. Are you alone?" he asked.
"Yes," I sighed, "but what about?"
"Just," he paused, "us."
My heart dropped, "What about us?"
"I miss you," he said, "a lot."
"I miss you, too, Aaron."
"I hate being away from you, and it makes things even worse when we're together for a little while and then we have to be separated again."
I felt tears forming in my eyes, "Long distance isn't easy."
"It's the second hardest thing I've ever had to do," he said.
"What's the first?" I asked.
"Just being away from you."
Tears fell and trickled down my face.
I sniffled, "So what do you want to do?"
"I don't want to lose you," he sniffled, so now I knew he was crying, too.
"You're not going to. No matter what, I'm always going to be in your life," I assured him.
"You promise me that?"
"I promise."
"Do you think we should break up?" he breathed out.
"I don't want to," I said honestly, "but if it takes some stress off to just be friends, then it's fine with me."
"That's the thing, though," he said. "I can't be just friends with someone I'm so in love with."
"It's not going to be the same," I said, "and no one said we had to lose the feelings we have for each other. We just have to kinda try to distant ourselves from each other."
"That's gonna be hard," he said, "but I guess we'll go through it together."
"We will," I said, "and we'll get through it as friends."
"Best friends," he added.
I smiled, "Yeah, the very best of friends."
I sniffled, and so did he, "Well, I do have to go. I think we are going to New Orleans for something."
"Me too. Madi and I are having a girls night watching movies," I said.
"Well, have fun, and text me when you get a chance," he said.
"I will."
"I love you, Kinsey," he said.
"I love you, too, Aaron."
The phone call ended.
