THE WEATHER MATCHED THE DAY PERFECTLY. the clouds were gray but the sun still shined through them.
elena spent almost thirty hours in the car, not making many stops due to charlie wanting to get to his daughter as fast as possible. she was tired, her legs were cramped and her phone died 2 hours in.
as soon as the car stopped in the arizona hospital parking lot elena jumped out of the car to stretch. her legs felt like they were going to give out on her.
the trio walked into the hospital and towards the front desk to ask for bella's room.
"charlie," carlilse called out to them, "shes okay."
the man with the mustache let out a sigh of relief and they all followed to bella's room.
elena hated hospitals, they always gave her the most anxiety. just knowing there were people dying in the same building as her made her sick to her stomach. the smell, the feeling, it was horrible. she had to clench her jaw many times to ground her from a panic attack while walking in the halls.
finally making it, they opened the door to a doctor talking to renée.
"thank you doctor frenzy." she says before the women in the white lab coat walks out.
elena's eyes roam the room, its all white and smells like hand sanitizer. she took a deep breath before her eyes landed on bella. she was asleep on the bed in one of those ugly hospital gowns with breathing tubes in her nose.
"she's okay, the doctor said she'll be asleep for a while longer because of the medication," renée explained to charlie.
the man only nodded and walked over to the side of his the bed, looking down at his daughter. he scratched his head and let out a sigh.
"im going to get some coffee," he says to no one in particular. everyone stays silent but acknowledged him.
"hi im renée by the way, bella's mom," she introduces herself to adriana.
"adriana," elena's mother smiles, "im sorry for all this, i know a kid is the most important person in a parent's life."
"yeah," renée smiles sadly crossing her arms and putting her attention to bella.
a knock was heard at the door before it was opened to reveal edward.
"hello, i was wondering if i could get some alone time with bella."
elena had never seen the pale teen look so normal. he was wearing a grey hoodie with some jeans and normal sneakers.
"of course, let us know if she wakes up please," renée responds.
the three women walk out of the room closing the door behind them. they walked out into the waiting room area where charlie was speaking to carlilse and the rest of the cullens were sitting.
"mija, you should go to the cafeteria and get some food." adriana tells her daughter.
elena wasnt sure if she could eat right now, her anxiety making it hard to even keep her saliva down.
"okay," is all she said not wanting to cause any more problems. as she began to walk away she heard a voice shes been aching to hear.
"elena, let me accompany you," jasper felt the anxiety radiation off of the girl. she only nodded.
the pair walked in the direction of the cafeteria in silence.
"so," she broke the silence, "what happened? if you dont mind me asking."
with her arms crossed she looked over to the blond for a second.
"james got to her but we caught up to them in time, luckily. he bit her, edward got all the venom out." he replied.
elena let out a sigh as they entered the cafeteria, getting in line, "is he gone?"
jasper stayed quiet for a few seconds, "yeah, we got rid of him. properly."
the teen girl was afraid to ask what he meant by "properly". did they stab him in the heart? garlic?
they went through the line in silence, elena only adding fries and a fruit cup to her tray that looked like the one from school.
"ill pay." he quickly handed the cashier the money before elena could.
"thanks." they walked towards the emptier part of the cafeteria, taking a seat across from eachother.
"so is it all over now?" she picks at her fruit with a fork.
he only stared. he wasnt sure what to tell her, yes they got james but victoria got away. he wanted nothing more than to tell her to get away as far as possible to keep her safe.
"go to prom with me." the statement caught elena off guard, making her look up to meet the golden eyes.
she shook her head slightly, "i dont know jasper. i havent been to a party since.."
even now, she didnt have the guts to say it out loud. the thought of going to a familiar environment as that night instantly put a knot in her tummy.
"ill keep you safe. i promise." his cold hands held onto her warm ones, "i wont let anything happen to you."
she stared at him, fighting with herself in her head.
softly she spoke, "okay."
