Humming quietly to myself, I got out of the car and took the bags of groceries out of the trunk. After locking the car, I made my way into the house, but stopped at the mailbox to take out my mail.
Immediately I noticed a rather large, square and heavy envelope. I wondered what it could be. Along with the rest of the mail, I put the envelope with the groceries and headed up the stairs to my apartment.
Just as I was about to put away the groceries and other odds and ends, there was a knock at the door. In front of the door was my good friend and colleague Amelia.
"Hi Amelia! What are you doing here?" I asked, giving her a quick hug of greeting.
"Oh, I was in the neighborhood and wanted to see how you were doing." she replied.
"I'm fine. Come on in! How about some tea? Or would you rather have coffee? I can make you an iced coffee if you like." I said to her as I stepped aside so she could come in.
"Iced coffee sounds really good. I can never make it as good as you." she replied as we made our way into the kitchen together.
"I've shown you how I make it so many times, haven't I?" I laughed as I took the mail out of the bag and placed it on the countertop. I then put the groceries in the fridge and took the opportunity to take out the milk.
"I know and yet yours is better. What's with the fancy envelope?" she asked, pointing to said envelope.
"I don't know yet. I just got it out of the mailbox and haven't had time to open it yet," I replied as I made the iced coffee for both of us.
"Hmm... looks like a wedding invitation if you ask me." then Amelia commented.
"Oh um, yeah you might be right about that." I mumbled. When she said the word wedding invitation, it occurred to me that it was the one invitation I wished I didn't get.
"Aren't you going to open it?" she wanted to know as I put the glass of coffee down in front of her.
"Not really. I think I know who it's from and I can actually do without it," I replied.
"What do you mean?" she inquired.
"Well... I think it's the invitation to my ex-boyfriend's wedding," I explained to her.
"What? Why would an ex invite you to his wedding? That's weird." she replied, astonished and wide-eyed.
"It kind of is, but we're still friends. Talk on the phone every now and then. And we see each other every once in a while when he's in town for work. But I haven't met his fiancée yet." I spoke as I took the envelope in my hands and then finally opened it.
It was exactly what I had thought and feared. Roman really did invite me to his wedding in three months. I shook my head in disbelief.
"Yep, just what I thought." I muttered as I looked at the beautiful yet rather snobbish invitation.
"Don't tell me you're considering going there?" asked Amelia, looking at me.
"No, I don't think that would be a good idea as an ex to show up there. Invited or not. I'm sure Roman invited me just to be polite, nothing more. Maybe I should just ignore it." I replied, taking a sip of my coffee.
"Honestly, you're right. I'm surprised the bride was okay with it. I wouldn't want an ex at my wedding." she said.
"No, I wouldn't want that either. That sounds like a lot of potential for trouble." I replied with a laugh.
With that, we dropped the subject. And I didn't think any more about it either.
