Together with our lawyer Mr. Mendes we arranged another meeting with Ava and her lawyer. We did this under the pretense of discussing details about Roman's role in the child's life.
What Ava did not know was that the private investigator Roman had hired did not find any evidence that she was really pregnant. This was great news for us, of course. The problem was how to get her to admit it.
The measures taken by the private investigator were not necessarily legal and would not be admissible as evidence in court. All we knew was that the doctor from whom the document was, which she had presented to us, did not have her as a patient. We knew this because the detective's team had hacked into the clinic's database.
And then there were the various printouts on the stationery that the clinic used. The detective found them in her trash. Apparently she had stolen the stationery from there or someone had gotten it for her. Perhaps she had also made the effort to imitate everything down to the smallest detail. However she had done it, it was clear that the document and the doctor's signature were not legitimate.
Unfortunately, we couldn't just go to the doctor and ask, because that fell under doctor-patient confidentiality. He was not allowed to tell us for legal reasons if she was his patient or if she was really pregnant.
The only way was to have both of them in the same room at the same time and put so much pressure on Ava that she admitted to lying.
"Can we please get started then? I'm not feeling so well." Ava said as soon as we entered the room.
"Just a moment of patience, Miss Wilson. We're still waiting for someone," Mr. Mendes said.
Before anyone could respond, there was a knock on the door and Mr. Mendes opened the door to let the guest in.
"Ah, Dr Fisher. I'm glad you could make it. May I introduce Mr and Mrs Reigns, Mr Lawrence, he is the attorney for one of your patients. Miss Wilson, of course, I don't have to introduce you. You already know each other," Mr. Mendes explained.
My gaze lingered on Ava's face. There was no way I was going to miss the moment she realized she was screwed.
"Mr. Mendes, would you kindly finally explain to me what I'm doing here?" the doctor demanded.
"Why, of course. I just need you to confirm something. Don't worry, I know you can't give me any details because of your confidentiality. I just want to know if this document was really written and signed by you," our lawyer explained and handed the document to Dr. Fisher.
He read through the document thoroughly and looked at the signature. On the other side of the table, Ava shifted uneasily in her chair.
"Well, I can assure you 100% that this document and the signature are not made by me. It is a fake." the doctor spoke.
"Thank you, Dr. Fisher. Am I correct in assuming that Miss Wilson is not your patient? If she is, you don't have to answer the question." the lawyer continued.
"The duty of confidentiality does not apply here. The woman present here is not a patient of mine. I can tell you I have never seen this woman before," Dr Fisher replied.
"I appreciate your time, Dr Fisher. You may leave now. I'll be happy to get back in touch with you later. Then we can talk about possible steps regarding the forgery of a medical document and your signature," Mr. Mendes said.
"I would really appreciate that. Goodbye." he replied and left.
"Well, well, well. Miss Wilson, I think it's time to tell the truth before you get any further entangled in lies. You already have a lot of trouble on your hands as it is. Do you admit that you're not expecting a child with Mr. Reigns? Or do you want us to go to a doctor together for an ultrasound and a blood test? How far are you willing to go to keep up your lie?" Mr. Mendes asked, staring her down.
I was surprised that her own lawyer said nothing about the whole thing. Probably he couldn't think of anything to say in your defense.
"All right! I am not pregnant! It was a lie. I just wanted him to come back to me!" Ava spat as she caved in after a few minutes of silence.
And just like that, our world was back in order. We could breathe freely again and enjoy our lives without that horrible woman.
A few minutes later, me and Roman were standing in that elevator again. In exactly the same place as a few weeks earlier, but the mood could hardly have been more different.
The doors barely closed when Roman had already pinned me firmly against the wall of the elevator and desperately pressed his lips to mine. I clearly felt how relieved he was. I felt the same way. I felt as light as air as I wrapped my arms around his neck. Too soon the elevator dinged and opened the doors.
"I can't tell you how happy I am that we're actually past it!" said Roman as he reluctantly broke away from me and we made our way to the exit.
"I'm so happy too!" I replied as I squeezed the hand he was holding tightly.
"I think this calls for a victory celebration. If you know what I mean. " he rasped sexily to me, his dark eyes sparkling with desire.
"Oh believe me. I know exactly what you mean and I'm right there with you, Mr. Reigns." I smirked.
