With a groan, I squeezed my eyes tighter shut to block out the harsh light. Why was it so bright? What time was it? What was happening? My whole body ached, but my head especially throbbed like crazy.
Slowly I opened my eyes and let my eyes wander around the room. Was I in the hospital? At least it looked very much like it. Then I noticed the little tube going up my nose. It was uncomfortable, so I raised my hand and tried to remove the tube. But as soon as I moved my hand, an incredible pain shot through my arm.
"Ouch!" I wailed.
"Muffin! Oh, God, Muffin. You're awake. How are you feeling?" asked a deep voice next to me. Weirdly, I hadn't even noticed anyone was in the room with me.
"Roman?" I croaked out, then cleared my throat.
"Yeah, it's all good, Muffin. I'm with you." he said, gently stroking my cheek light as a feather. This confused me. What was he doing here?
"Roman, what happened? Why are you here? I haven't seen you for ages," I wanted to know.
Roman's eyes widened and he looked at me in confusion. As if he was trying to make sense of my words. But before he could say anything back, the door opened and someone came in whom I assumed was a doctor.
"Ah, Y/N. You're finally conscious again. That's good. How are you feeling?" he asked.
"Um... I don't know. What's going on here?" I asked him.
"You were in an accident. Do you remember anything, Mrs. Reigns?" he wanted to know.
"I'm not Mrs. Reigns. I'm Y/N L/N." I said, confused. Next to me, I heard Roman gasp for air.
"Y/N, what's the last thing you remember?" the doctor started again.
I thought about it for a moment. But it just wouldn't come to me. The memory was just... blank. And it scared me a lot.
"It appears that you have suffered some form of memory loss. Probably triggered by the trauma. However, your examination results were normal. That means we can assume that it is only temporary and that you will have your memory back soon. Mr. Reigns, talk to her. It may help to jump-start the memory. It is possible that it will only take a few minutes, but please don't be surprised if it takes days," the doctor explained and left us alone.
"Ask me anything you want to know, Muffin." said Roman softly, but it seemed like he was having trouble controlling his voice.
"What happened to me?" I began.
"You had an accident. It was Ava's fault. You were-" he continued, but I interrupted him immediately.
"Ava? Your fiancée? Why? What does she have to do with this?" To say I was confused was the understatement of the century.
"Let me tell you everything from the beginning, okay? Let me know if it gets to be too much for you." He replied and very gently took my hand in his.
Then he started to tell me how it had come to the accident. How one day he was drunk and stood in front of my door begging me to come to his wedding, how he crashed the wedding at the altar and how he got down on one knee after asking the priest for the favor.
The short ceremony, the celebration with his family, the honeymoon and how he asked me to move in with him. And then how the rejected bride freaked out and what she tried to do to get Roman back. It was so much information in one fell swoop. So much mind blowing information that I had a hard time comprehending.
Since I didn't reply anything, Roman continued with the story. How we were talking on the phone and joking when he heard the collision and yelled for me. Then he explained to me how he called the police, an ambulance and fire department and how they then located my cell phone to find me.
From what he told me, it must have been close. If we hadn't been talking on the phone when it happened, any help would have come too late for me.
Then he told me how witnesses had seen Ava running away and that she had been arrested a little later and was now in jail.
"You were unconscious for three days. Your collarbone is broken and you have a cut on your head and some cuts on your body. And your whole body is covered with bruises. Other than that, you and our baby are fine." he finished the story.
"Woah, wait a minute. Did you say 'baby'?" I asked, shocked. I couldn't believe it. I was pregnant? I was married to the man of my dreams, the one man I have always loved and I was pregnant?
"Yes, baby. We're having a baby. And the little bean is doing great. I love you both so much and I'm so thankful I didn't lose you," Roman sobbed, tears streaming down his cheeks.
Slowly I raised my other hand and waited for a sign of pain, but nothing happened. That was good. I put my hand to Roman's cheek and wiped away the tears with my thumb. At that moment, I felt a tingling sensation. I felt the love radiating from this man and at that moment I knew it had to be true.
A second later I felt something else. It was almost like a nudge. A nudge from inside me. My hand slipped from his cheek and I put it on my stomach in surprise.
"Oh!" I gasped. That was my baby, our baby. It was moving!
And then, like someone flipping a light switch, it all came back to me. Every single memory of our life together. Every detail. As if the movement of the child inside me had awakened me from a bad dream. I quickly looked at Roman.
"Ro!" I breathed, grabbing his shirt and pulling him to me to kiss him in relief. He was a little surprised, but did not hesitate to return my kiss.
"Do you... do you remember?" he asked cautiously.
"Yes, and I love you!" I replied, pulling him back to me.
"Thank God you do! I love you. I was so scared, Muffin. I thought I lost you both." he spoke softly, his voice breaking with emotion.
"We're fine, baby. Everything is fine." i reassured him. My hand was nestled against his cheek, stroking it reassuringly.
"Is she really in jail?" I asked after a while.
"Yes, and for good. She can't hurt us anymore." confirmed Ro and leaned in to kiss me again and again.
