'Why are you in such a mood?'

'I thought I shouldn't keep my emotions bottled up,' I say.

'Using my words against me? Again?'

'Sorry.'

'What is it? What's wrong?'

Silence. After a while I give in, nonetheless.

'Why can't I join them?' I ask.

'Because they're your brother and father's friends. Let them have this, alright?'

'It's not fair. I want to be friends with them too.'

'I'm sure you will someday.'

Mom puts her knife and fork down.

'Honey, listen,' she said. 'The Cornelius family is wealthy and influential. Your father and brother will do everything they can to keep them on our good side. Trust me. You will meet them one day.'
