The place to sit was a mere plank. A small one at that. Olivia's entire right arm touched his left. He didn't shower recently.
With every bump in the road Olivia tightened all her muscles as to not fall off. Behind them, on the actual cart, laid hay. In front of them, a single horse dragging it all along with them.
It wasn't a pleasant experience. The cold, the scent, the bumps.
The man's cart was smaller than Olivia had hoped. But she kept telling herself, it was better than having to walk the entire way to the Wishing Well Inn.
On another positive side, the view wasn't terrible. On her left Olivia saw snowed over grassland that seemed to go on forever. The sun made it almost impossible to look at it. On her right, a forest. It wasn't dense, so every now and then she could see a deer following them for a while.
'Would you mind if I parked the cart on the side for a bit?' the man next to Olivia asked.
'Sure,' Olivia said.
The man pulled the reigns, and the horse slowed down immediately.
'May I ask why?'
'I need to pee,' the man said.
'Oh,' Olivia said. She felt her cheeks burning.
Perhaps I shouldn't have asked.
The cart came to a full stop on the side of a curve in the road. The man stood up from the plank, and onto the ground.
'I'll be right back,' he said before walking into the woods.
It had been a couple of minutes, and the man still hadn't returned. Olivia was afraid she might have gone crazy in that time.
She started hearing footsteps in the distance. On top of that, the forest on her right was constantly producing noises she had become very much aware of. Every little animal made the bushes rustle. Every breeze did as well. Before, Olivia was constantly looking around her, but she had given up on that. There was never anything there.
When she heard the bushes rustle for the millionth time she didn't look up. Instead, she was rubbing her hands together to keep them from freezing off.
Olivia was about to lay them on her face for a bit more warmth when she felt the back of the cart dip down. She turned around, and saw the man coming towards her. However, before she could say anything he wrapped his arm around her neck.
He pushed the back of her head into his chest and kept forcing it. Olivia felt her throat being closed.
'What do you know about Benjamin Laurier?' the man asked. His breath on her check made her tremble.
'What?' she pushed out of her throat.
'Laurier. Where is he now?'
'I don't know who that is.'
'Yes, you do, don't lie to me,' the man pressed. 'You were spotted with him. Where is he?'
From the corner of her eye Olivia thought she spotted two figures. The cold and loss of oxygen made her brain play tricks on her.
'I don't know.'
Her vision got blurry, her eyes tarted watering, and the sun seemed to slowly lose its brightness. She heard someone shout in the background but had no idea who it was. She felt the man behind her move.
He then let go of her, and Olivia fell back onto the cart. If it wasn't for the hay on there, she might have had a concussion. Instead, she would probably only have a headache for a few days. Perhaps a small wound.
The shouting continued. Meanwhile, Olivia got her vision back slowly but surely.
She got back and wanted to go to the people several meters in front of her. Her head didn't completely agree with that, which made her sit down on the cart again until the black spots were gone from her vision. Her headache didn't disappear.
When she focused on the people, she recognized the man quickly. The other two men, however...
Olivia stood up and slowly made her way to the group. One of the unknown men gestured her to stay away. She stopped.
The wind had picked up and made her eyes water again. Her vision got blurry once more, and she crouched down so she wouldn't fall. She refrained herself from sitting down as to not get more snow on her than needed.
The shouting was still going on, now combined with the sound of physical combat. All three received one punch after the other. It didn't seem to end.
Until it did.
The man who brought her here received a punch to the jaw and dropped to the ground.
One of the remaining men crouched down to him. The other approached Olivia and crouched down next to her.
'Are you alright?' a familiar voice asked. 'Let's get out of here.'
