FLASHBACK
February 25th, 2019
"Baby, are you ready to go? I need to be at the club at 8:30 tonight, remember?" Dusk called out to her fiancé, Sebastian, who was taking his sweet-ass time in the bathroom. "I'll be out in a second, Dusky!" He called out. He's been saying that for the past fifteen minutes now. If he doesn't come out within the next ten minutes, I'll head there myself. I'm not letting him ruin this performance for me. As much as Dusk loved her fiancé, he could sometimes be a massive pain.
But did she really love him? The only other time she loved somebody more than herself was when she was in love with Klaus, her best friend and confidant amid all the chaos during their time in The Umbrella Academy. He had been there for her through Five's disappearance and Ben's death until the two were forced to go their separate ways and make their own paths. His path was most likely drugs, and hers was music.
The toilet flushing brought Dusk out of her thoughts, making her look up to see Sebastian had gotten out of the bathroom, dressed in a casual look of jeans and a white shirt. Not very club-like material, but Dusk couldn't complain, otherwise he would get angry with her as he had done that on numerous occasions. At times, seeing his true colors made her question why she ever got into a relationship with him or even agreed to marry him in the first place. Sometimes she wished she could go back in time and erase their erratic relationship altogether.
"Can we go now?" She asked, biting back a sigh. Sebastian grabbed his coat from the rack, and they took a taxi to the club a few blocks from their apartment building. This night was not only a big deal because Dusk was performing, but it was also a big deal because she had been working on a song for a long time, talking about someone she loved. She had a hunch that people would think it was about her significant other...
It wasn't.
Instead, it was about Klaus and the romantic nights they had spent together, holding each other close as they shared passionate kisses. Besides the nickname Songbird, Klaus had also given her the nickname of Moonlit Rose. She had no idea where this came from, but she became attached to it and remembered his voice.
They sat on his bed, wrapped in each other's arms as they did not want to let each other go. As they held one another, she started crying. "Dusk, what's wrong?" He asked, bringing a soft hand to her hair. "I just don't want to lose you. You mean everything to me. What if what happened to Ben happens to you too? I would never forgive myself," she sobbed, tears spilling down her pale cheeks.
"Moonlit Rose, please don't cry. I'm not going to die, I promise," He consoled, bringing her face into his hands. "What was that you called me?" the raven asked, meeting his gaze. Klaus smiled before pressing a soft kiss to her lips. "Moonlit Rose. Do you like Songbird better?" He asked, his voice becoming concerned. "No, it's beautiful, I love it!"
The taxi came to a stop outside of the club, and she walked out, Sebastian in tow. They sat at a table a few feet away from the stage, watching as the other performers began to belt out lyrics to karaoke. Some were decent, while others were not very good. This time, it seemed to be a smaller crowd, but it could've easily been because people were at work, busting their asses on the late-night shifts.
"Alright, our next performer is a young woman with a talented passion for singing. Please give it up for Dusk Hargreeves!" The host spoke into his mic, drawing claps from the crowd. The raven walked towards the stage and grabbed the mic. "Hi, I'm Dusk Hargreeves, and tonight I'm going to be singing a special song. This is about someone special in my life. And I hope you guys like it. It's called Moonlight," she said all of this while looking at Sebastian so it didn't look suspicious to him.
She started playing her demo that included the backup vocals, and Dusk held back tears as she remembered Klaus.
The sun is setting
And you're right here by my side
And the movie is playing
But we won't be watching tonight
Every look, every touch
Makes me wanna give you my heart
I be crushin' on you, baby
Stay the way you are
I never knew, I never knew
You could hold moonlight in your hands
'Til the night I held you
You are my moonlight
Moonlight
I kiss his fingertips
As I'm wishing he's all mine
He's giving me Elvis
With some James Dean in his eyes
Puts his lips on my neck
Makes me want to give him my body
I be fallin' for you, baby
And I just can't stop
'Cause I never knew, I never knew
You could hold moonlight in your hands
'Til the night I held you
You are my moonlight
Moonlight
Baby, I be fallin'
You're my moonlight
Moonlight
He's so bossy
He makes me dance
Tryna sit in the back of his whip
And just cancel my plans
Sweet like candy
But he's such a man
He knows just what it does
When he's holding me tight
And he calls me "Moonlight" too
The crowd burst out with applause, and Dusk wiped the corners of them with her finger. She stared out into the crowd, hoping but also knowing at the same time Klaus wasn't there to hear her song secretly dedicated to him. Sebastian sat in the crowd, slowly clapping for her. He didn't seem so happy that she was getting all the attention. Sebastian had always been an attention seeker. He wanted everyone to notice him. He grew jealous of his fiancée's success and wished he was just as successful as her.
Towards the end of the night, they were back in a taxi heading back to the apartment. Sebastian had gotten tipsy, leaving Dusk to put him to bed. "Alright, you need to lay down and sleep. I'll get you some water," She whispered. As she walked to the kitchen, he began to ramble about the song she sang. "Beautiful song about me, baby," He slurred. Dusk had chills go through her spine, and she bit her tongue, trying her hold back the truth.
"Get some sleep, okay Moonlit Rose?" Klaus's voice whispered into her ears, making it feel like he was there with her. She looked over her shoulder, thinking he was right there, but to her misfortune, he wasn't.
