Vegard rushed inside the house and let everything sink in. He went into the kitchen and leaned on the counter. This is not true. Bård’s not dead. He can’t be dead. He repeated over and over in his head. But no matter how he tried to oppose the fact that he just saw Bård’s wound heal, a part of him subconsciously mourned for the real thing. Bård’s dead and he can’t do anything about it. He’s the big brother. He should know how to mend it. Surely something can be done about it. There must be some way to undo it, or to lengthen his life, or just make him alive again. Vegard couldn’t believe himself. He’s actually thinking of saving Bård from death, which means he already believed that his brother is dead. He went towards the sink and splashed his face with water. He leaned forward and watched the water flow until it gets drained. What am I thinking? He’s not dead. He repeated and the process starts again.
Vegard then heard someone coming near him. He knew who it was but he didn’t bother to look up.
“Tell me this is all a joke. Please.” Vegard faintly pleaded with eyes shut still leaning towards the sink.
“I’m sorry Vegard but this is not a joke.” Bård replied faintly as he stood behind his brother. He doesn’t know what to do.
Vegard turned the faucet off and faced his brother eye to eye.
“You’re here, in front of me and I am looking straight into your eyes. I know, you’ve been pointing this out over and over but I couldn’t really grasp the fact that you are already dead. I know! You’re dead, that’s what you’ve been saying. But you couldn’t expect me to just believe that. For goodness sake Bård even if you’re lying inside a coffin I still won’t believe that you are dead! I wouldn’t just accept that! Do you understand me?! You’re my brother. I couldn’t just let my baby brother die.” Vegard said while holding back the tears in his eyes from falling.
“I...I don’t know what to do. I’m sorry if I have to be this little shit but I really don’t know how to answer your questions. I’m really sorry for acting so immaturely but it’s all done now. I am dead. Just...just try to accept that.” Bård said with his pleading eyes.
“Is there something we can do about it? Anything? The library, have you started reading about something like this? Maybe there’s a solution or a spell or something.” Vegard desperately asked his brother.
“Reve said that there’s nothing.” Bård answered quietly.
“No. No. There must be something.” Vegard said and walked away. He couldn’t just accept that.
“Vegard please. My days here are counted. Let’s just enjoy the rest of it.” Bård said as he called for his brother who’s now in the dining area.
“How?” Vegard asked Bård with his back against him.
“Just pretend that you don’t know that I’m dying.” Bård said.
“You know that’s not easy.” Vegard said.
“But I know you will do it for me.” Bård said. He moved closer to Vegard and faced him.
“What if I don’t?” Vegard said looking into Bård’s eyes.
“You’ve been always there for me since we were little. You never fail to do any request from me even if it’s against your will. And I know that you won’t refuse this last one.” Bård said.
“Don’t say that. Don’t say about this thing as your last. Don’t you fucking dare say that in front of me?! You understand?!” Vegard said with anguish and tears in his face. No. This is not goodbye yet. No.
“I...I don’t know how to thank you. I was always this stupid piece of shit all our entire lives but you...you were the perfect big brother everyone would wish for. I am really grateful to have you as my brother even if at times you’re just a boring short geek with glasses. For saving my face in front of everyone, for taking care of me, for protecting my ego, for stopping me from running into trouble, and for everything you selflessly sacrificed for your useless little brother, thank you very much. I don’t know what I have done to deserve you. I couldn’t just go without telling you this. I have to tell you this before I die.” Bård said now tears falling from his eyes.
