CHAPTER 28- He Will Never Find Out

Honestly, I want her to go. I don't want her to wake and look for me and learn that I'm gone. I know she's strong but I don't know if she can handle another loss. If she dies, she wouldn't have to handle any of this mess anymore.

"Hey." Vegard said as he put his hand on Bård's shoulder. It broke his thoughts. He paid a glance to his brother and made space for him on the bench. Vegard sat down beside him.

"You okay?" Vegard asked.

"No." Bård said, looking down.

"Listen, you will get through this." Vegard tried to comfort his brother.

"I won't." Bård said quietly. He knew for a fact that even if he wanted to get through this, he just simply cannot.

"I know this is hard for you but try to be strong. You wilI get through this." Vegard repeated.

"Vegard, I won't." Bård said still looking down.

"You will." Vegard continued.

"No. I won't. I want to, but I don't have enough time to fix all of this." Bård blurted. His mouth slipped.

Vegard's brows furrowed.

"What do you mean?" Vegard asked and faced his brother.

"Nothing." Bård lied.

"What do you mean by you don't have time?" Vegard insisted, now really worried.

Bård stayed silent. He wanted to tell Vegard but he's not sure if he'll believe him. Bård faced his brother as well and looked into his eyes. He needed to tell him. He can't just leave him alone clueless of what had happened.

"Not here. Let's go somewhere." Bård said.

"Where?" Vegard asked now getting scared.

Bård took some time to think of some private place.

"How about the old tree house?" Bård suggested. It was a place only Vegard and him know. It's where they hide whenever their mom gets angry at them.

"Why can't you just tell it here?" Vegard asked.

"I need to explain." Bård said. They went out the hospital and drove towards their parents house. Thier parents were not at home and Vegard's family went to visit Helene's dad. On the other hand, they've never seen Reve and Ebonne since they left the house yesterday. The house was silent so they went directly to the backyard and walked a few meters until they reached an old tree with a tree house in one of it's large branch. The tree house looked like it's about to fall down so they decided to just sit on the grass.

"I missed this place." Vegard said as he laid spread-eagled on the grass.

"Me too." Bård said with tight lips.

"I remember when you broke mom's antique vase. You hid here for a day." Vegard said chuckling.

"It's we Vegard." Bård said in a lopsided grin.

"Yeah." Vegard said and laughed. Bård laughed too. Then they fell silent.

"What is it that you're going to tell me?" Vegard asked suddenly serious.

Bård braced himself and tried to find the right words to start it.

Vegard felt that Bård  is holding back so he sat up and looked at his brother, pressing him for answer.

“Come on, what have you terribly done this time?” Vegard tried to joke but it didn’t penetrated Bård.

“Vegard, how much do you know about Fox people?” Bård started.
