Melanie hummed along to a song as she opened the door to the apartment. Her AirPods were on full blast. From the corner of her eyes she could see Y/n on the small couch. She was curled up with a blanket. No t.v. on, no book in hand, no music playing, just staring at the wall. The music in Melanie's ears stopped once she took one of her pods out. "Hey are you okay?"

Y/n stared at the changing show recommendations of Netflix. She didn't even answer Melanie's question. Which lead Melanie to walk in front of her. "Y/n what happened?"

"Hmm?" Y/n snapped back into reality. Her thoughts were so wild at the moment she didn't even hear the door open. She just kept thinking about the proposition. The money he said he'd give. The way he knew every detail of her financial status to hold against her. The black card that sat untouched in her pocket.

She sat in her comfy pajamas, fingers twiddling with the loose string.

"You good, girl?" Melanie's face was stretched with worry.

Y/n faked a small smile. "Oh yeah, I'm fine, I just had a tiring day. That's all." She yawned to really sell it.

It sold because Melanie shrugged her shoulders and made her way towards her room. She was sure to be tired from going straight to work after her last class. She'd been there all day while Y/n was left alone to contemplate her life. "Well do you wanna smoke a little to help you sleep better?"

Y/n shook her head. "Nah it's just gonna make me anxious right now."

"Well do you wanna hit my juul?" She offered. "I got a new flavor to try."

Y/n shook her head once again. "I'm fine really, Mel." She got off the couch with her blanket thrown over her like a cape. "I think I'm just gonna call it a night. Talk to you in the morning."

Melanie sighed and finished taking her books out to study. "Well did you at least eat something?" She called out from her room. There was a beat of silence and still nothing came afterwards. Rolling her eyes she focused on studying the next chapter in her textbook.

Y/n had heard Mels voice and let out her own sigh. She wanted to tell her, but how would she explain a mobster trying to recruit her for work. As of now she would have to wait until she came up with a decision on the job. She didn't even know what she would be doing for him, but the payment he promised was enough to pay her entire tuition and some. She wouldn't have to be worried about being a burden on her working parents. She could pay off some bills so they could finally retire and rest. It's wishful thinking. The kind that you get when you start overthinking things and then those wishes don't come true.

Y/n slipped her hand in her pocket to grab the card he'd given her. It was way too late to call, but perhaps he'd answer a text message. She tapped the number into her phone and then typed out her message. She quickly hit send before her sanity actually caught up to her.

Her heart beat wildly against her chest. She couldn't believe she had actually done it. Now she waits.

Chris was finishing up some deals he had come across on paper when his work phone chimed beside him. He almost ignored it, thinking it was a shipment confirmation, but a quick glance changed his mind. Out of his peripheral view he could see an unknown number pop up with the message preview showing. A couple words making a big choice.

Unknown Number: I'm in :)

Chris chuckled to himself. How cute. She put a little smiley face. He almost felt bad for corrupting her innocence, but how could he when he knew deep down there was nothing innocent about her.

Chris: I'm glad love, I'll have my driver pick you up tomorrow so we can discuss some things.

He hit send and started gathering his things up for the night. He stashed the previously counted money in the safe in his wall. Then neatly put all the papers in one stack waiting to be looked over once again. After giving his desk the once over, he stretched his back out and rolled his neck to work some of the kinks out. His body had been sore the last few days from intense training. He wanted to make sure he was fit for any situations that might arise in the future.

Chris grabbed his work phone and stuffed it in his pajama pocket. He walked down the long hallway to the open area of living room space and to the right was the large kitchen. He grabbed himself a glass of water. It was awfully quiet around the house. He knew it was a large house. but he usually was always able to hear the soft paws of his dog playing with his toys.

He paused getting the water for a second. "Dodge!" He called out. Within seconds the pupper was tramping his way into the kitchen area to greet his dad's command. "Whatcha doin' bub?" Chris reached down to rub the dogs light brown almost orange fur. He had white in certain areas like the chest and the end of his tail and at his feet. The mixed-breed boxer was Chris's best friend. One of the only companions he could actually trust to give him loyalty.

"Bedtime bubba." He commanded. Dodger bolted down the hall to the bedroom. Chris let out a small laugh and finished getting his water. He turned off all the lights and followed the pup into the largest bedroom in the house.

Dodger had his corner of the room where if he wanted he could sleep in his dog bed, but most time Chris allowed him to sleep in the bed. The only time he wasn't sharing the bed with him was when Chris was entertaining guest for the night. Then when he kicked them out Dodger had his normal place in bed back.

After brushing his teeth and getting ready for bed, Chris finally slipped under the soft luxurious covers. Dodger settling on top right next to him. He thought to check the phone since it had dinged while he was getting ready for bed. Sure enough there was another text. This one even shorter than the last she had sent.

Y/n: :0 okay

Chris could tell she was feeling nervous just by her text. He'd have to reassure her that he truly wants her to succeed; although, she doesn't need to know that he just wants her.

"Oh bubba, she has no idea what she's getting into."

The pup tilted his head to the side. Wagging his tail and sticking his pink tongue out. He rolled over to allow a belly rub. Chris happily obliged.

"It would be nice to have someone else around wouldn't it Dodge?" Dodger whined and nuzzled his face into Chris's thigh. "I know buddy, all this fortune and I only share it with you, but I doubt you mind." He slid farther down to fully encase himself in the warmth. Dodger went back to being curled up.

He knew he must've looked insane. Talking to his dog like he was actually talking back. If anyone ever said anything to him about it he'd just kill them.
