I recognised the voice as one of my guards and opened the door up for him. His expression was one of exhaustion and agony. A hand clutched the oozing wound, staining red onto his shirt.
"You need a doctor!" I exclaimed, holding the heavy door open for him.
"Your Majesty, you're my priority right now. If you die...so do all of us. Please, follow me." Complying, I wrapped a protective arm around my bump and released a shaky breath.
I would be okay. We would be okay. My baby couldn't die, not after anything that had happened.
As we stepped into the hallways, I was shook by the mayhem and chaos that surrounded me. Gunfire rocketed around us, vibrating amongst the hollow halls and causing the building to shudder in fear of destruction.
The guard's grip on my arm was tight, his fear and panic showing in the way he held me without a care that he was blatantly hurting me. I chose not to wince when it got tighter, constricting the blood flow in my arm, and followed him down the spiral of stairs towards the main floor.
Rory, Wyatt, Xander and Flicker all flashed in my mind. Flo and Daniel were safe, they didn't live there but I was the main priority, they weren't. No-one was collecting them, they were left to fend for themselves.
If it was just me, I would tell the guard to save his life and run off in search of my friend but I wasn't willing to risk losing this baby for anything.
"Watch out!" Someone yelled, causing the guard to jump onto me, sheltering my body from the incoming assault of rain fire.
I cried out as the dead weight of the man's body slumped onto me. Blood leaked onto me, and my ear rung a screeching sound from the loud shots.
He was dead. He died saving me and for what...so I could just lie here and wait to be killed too.
Using my strength, I hauled the man off me, letting his body slowly slump to the side. I took a second to close his eyes and whisper a small prayer, before hauling myself up.
Stumbling, I managed to make it to the last floor of stairs that would lead me to the panic room. Well, one of several.
"Queen Arabella," A voice sighed in relief. My instinct was to run but the Dahlia uniform and kind smile was enough to warrant hesitation. "I've been assigned to escort you to safety."
Blood stained his uniform and a sharp jagged scar ran down his cheek. The smile showcased his set of gnarly yellow teeth and a foul smell eroded off him that caused me to gag.
"Who assigned you?" My voice trembled slightly. I didn't know what to do, who to trust.
"General Wyatt, he's there now with Lady Rory." Nodding carefully, I let the man take my arm and lead me down the stairs. The moment he passed the panic room hidden behind the tapestry, I knew something was up.
