A week later, and I was already bored of this stupid competition. I had chosen Richard to eliminate for obvious reasons and then retired to my room for the rest of the day.
Meeting the man who would one day be my husband was frightening. They all seemed like good men, who would care for Dahlia and me, but they weren't Hardin. No-one could ever be him and it broke my heart to know that I would spend the rest of my days without love, wallowing in grief with only my child to bring me joy.
I was actively avoiding all the contestants and had succeeded, apart from yesterday when I ran into Jose in gardens. He spent an hour telling me all about the different flowers and vegetables growing about, until I eventually made up an excuse and fled.
My friends were no help. They spent the only hours we had together discussing my potential husband and fawning over the candidates.
My bump was growing and it was getting harder to conceal with loose clothing. Although everyone, including the candidates, knew that I was pregnant with the heir, the bump makes it all too real.
A whine from my right brought me back to reality. Setting down my book, which was left aimlessly in on my lap, I reached forward and gently picked up Ajax.
His hair had turned a rich honey bronze, and his nose more pronounced, his lips turned down into a frown, almost identical to Wyatt. Smoothing back his sweaty hair, which glued to his forehead, I whispered some sweet words and tried to settle him down.
I moved closer to the open window and perched on the ledge, allowing him to feel the cool draft breezing in. His cries just increased in sound and I quickly dove my hand inside the bag, Rory had given me, before I left for the library.
My hand fumbled for his bottle, which I found and then flicked off its lid. Ajax refused to latch onto the nipple, his head shaking furiously side to side.
Setting the bottle down, I raised him high and smelt his nappy. Nothing. Then I checked to see if he peed. Nothing.
He wasn't running a fever, nor did he have a rash or anything. Thinking he was warm, I stripped off his clothes but that just made him more upset. So, I bundled him up in a blanket and he screamed.
Sighing, I slumped down onto the couch and glanced at the clock. It had only been half an hour. I couldn't bring Wyatt and Rory a screaming baby if they might be right in the middle of...well, you know.
Only a guard stood, posted outside the door, and I knew Flo had left for the day. Xander was no help with babies and Flicker was even worse than her. The only person I could have asked was Hardin, if he was here. Babies were always magically soothed as soon as they were in his arms. I had envied him for it.
Ajax screamed louder. I still did.
"Ohh please be quiet Aj. What do you want? You have to give me a sign, anything." His cries went quiet and just as I thought I had braved this screaming monster, he began screech.
