"I have to go find him."
I try to take off but Tony swiftly pulls me back by my waist. "Hold on! You can't just go after an injured patient. They were probably taking him to the ICU!"
"Then I need to go there."
He pulls me back again when I try to break free. "You can't go into the ICU, Bree. Besides, are you even sure that was him? Isn't he in hiding because he's on a wanted list? Why would he come back here if he knows people are out looking for him?"
"That's what I need to find out. Let go!" I manage to get out of his grip.
He crosses his arms and stares at me. "What exactly are you expecting to do? Waltz up in the guys room and question him? We're in a hospital, Bree. You can't just walk into someone's room."
I glance around the hallway, fists clinched down by my sides. A door opens up a few feet down from us. Two nurses walk out, putting on their caps and walking to a different part of the building.
"I can if I look like everyone else."
Tony's brows furrow. "What do you mean?"
I push past him to where the door was and wait nonchalantly next to it for another employee to walk out. The door swings open and a woman walks out, letting go of it as soon as she's past the doorway. I slide my foot out to silently watch it.
Tony's eyes widen when he realizes what I'm doing. "Bree, don't you dare." He whispers.
I slip through the crack, into the empty locker room and let the door shut behind me. There's closed lockers everywhere, I don't know how I'm supposed to find a uniform up for grabs and I've never actually gone out of my way to take risks like this. Its kind of nauseating being this on edge.
The lights are dim in here, almost making it impossible to see anything. I have no idea where the other light switches are for the rest of the lights.
I pull on a few of the locker doors hoping one will pop open but I'm pretty sure every single one of them is locked. They make this shit look so much easier in the movies.
The door opens and I whip around the backside of the wall of lockers to hide. I can see a woman not far away from me turning her lock to get into her things.
She reaches in and pulls out her keys that were laying right on top of a folded pair of scrubs. I glance down at the name tag hanging off her belt loop.
I take a deep breath and walk out from behind the lockers. "Hey! Kenzie, right?"
She looks up at me, puzzled. "Yeah. Who are you?"
"I'm Maisy, the new intern. I was told that you were supposed to help me out with getting my own scrubs. Apparently the guy who was going to get them for me had to leave early."
"Oh, yeah I can get you some. We've got extra in this locker."
She walks to the back and opens up an unlocked locker.
Of course it could've been that easy.""Thank you! You're amazing."
"It's no problem. Did you get your ID already?"
"Yep. Everything else is perfect. I appreciate it."
I pull out a pair of clean scrubs and bolt out of the locker room, hoping I didn't look too suspicious.
Tony snags my arm and pulls me down the hall. "Bree, what the hell are you thinking?"
"I have to see him."
"Why? He's wanted and I'm sure they're taking care of it. He looked banged up pretty bad. You don't need to intervene."
"I'm not going to intervene. I was just going to see how bad his condition is."
"You could always ask, you know?"
"Then I won't get a guaranteed answer. Besides, this is much more fun." I wink and slip away into the bathroom.
I throw the scrubs on over my clothes and pull the hat down on my head. The only thing that's missing to make me look like a legit nurse is my name tag and an ID.
Tony waits anxiously by the door for me to come back. "What exactly are you planning to do here?"
"I won't go into his room if he's knocked out. I wanted to see what happened to him. I can ask someone. They'll tell me if they think I'm one of them."
"You sound crazy."
"Help me find a name tag." I start looking around for anyone not paying attention that I can steal one from.
Tony grips my wrist again. "Bree. Can you be rational right now? Your best friend is in labor and you're impersonating a nurse to find out details of some crazy dude who shot you that might not even be the guy you saw!"
"It was him, Tony. I know it was him."
"Then you can find out what happened later when they announce it on the news. Take that stuff off and lets go to the waiting room."
I'm already too far into this. My mind is thinking the worst right now and the main reason I need to do this is just to make sure I really did see him. I need to know if this is like what happened at the bowling alley. It's completely possible I'm just seeing things.
"I'll be right back. I swear."
I book it around the corner before Tony can stop me again, slowing my speed as soon as I'm faced with a few more nurses.
They don't take a second glance at me so I must be doing pretty well blending in. No one has noticed the absence of an ID or even that I'm wearing the wrong kind of shoes.
I go to press the elevator button when I start eavesdropping on the group of three behind me.
"They said it was him. Gina already got in contact with the police." The tall bald one says.
"That's crazy. How did they even find the guy after this long?"
"He probably tried to go back to his dealer and got fucked over."
"Or he tried to go finish that girl off that he shot. She must've put up one hell of a fight." Another laughs.
"It doesn't matter now, they don't even think he's going to make it." The short brunette girl adds.
"It was that bad?"
"Yeah. Multiple stab wounds. Whoever did this to him didn't do it as a warning. They intended for him not to survive."
