Meeting Steve Rogers is unexpected, but not the unpleasent type. They joke, laugh and jog together. Then, he meets Natasha Romanov. A pretty woman, but tortured soul. He sees it immediately, in the way they look at each other. It's the way his parents looked at each other.
They feel each other's pain.

They are soulmates.

Sam doesn't think they know they are, but it's not his place to tell.

The last two months were hell for him, his soulmate was in constant pain. A hit here, electroshocks there, and pain that closely feels like stabbingwounds made his side's burn. He doesn't think they are, though, since that would mean his soulmate has got to be dead.

Nobody survives so many stabbing wounds without superhuman abilities.

He just wants them to stop hurting his soulmate, whoever they are.

As Captain America knocks on his door two weeks after their first encounter and asks for his help, he doesn't think twice and agrees, telling them about the Falcon program and Riley. He meets a new world thanks to the blond Captain, new possibilities to be even more useful. And he dives right into it. He doesn't care how dangerous it's gonna be, this might be his last chance to find his soulmate. He needs to find them.

Steve tells him about program insight and who is going to be involved.

"And trust no one." The blond says for the thousandth time.

Natasha, who is sitting in the backseat of Sam's car, leans forward to roll her eyes.
"He says while trusting a complete stranger. No offence, Sam."

"None taken, ma'am."

They bicker and argue around till a metal hand rips through Sam's car window and snatches Starwell right out of it, throwing him carelessly into a driving truck, into the lively traffic. As if that isn't bad enough, the metal guy climbs to the front and rips Sam's steering wheel out of his hands. Alright, now Sam is scared.

It erupts in a heavy fight with bullets hitting the roof of the car as Natasha aims at nothing in the air and they lose control of the car as it gets ramped by a black van. Sam can't do nothing but step on the breaks, making the guy on top of it scrap across the street.
Sam's knees feel like they are on fire, he might have hit them somewhere.

Before he can ponder on that a thought longer, he gets interrupted by the fight breaking out in front of his eyes. He looses Steve and Natasha, as well as the guy with the metal arm in the progress and stays on top of the bridge.

He fights off the bad guys with knives and tricks he learned in the war, and he knows the enemy almost never managed to get a hit.

So why are his sides burning?

He looks downwards and sees Steve land a mean punch against the metal arm guy's right side. Both are fighting for their lives it seems and both are equally matched, for some reason.

Sam is afraid of metal arm guy.

He limbs back to the remains of his car and reaches for the wings in his backseat. Clipping them onto his back, he flies just in time to see the metal arms guy's mask fall of and Steve Rogers, the man that can do this all day, freezes.

"Bucky?" Steve asks, shock making his calm and baritone voice a pitch higher.

And a voice, so soft, yet so rough thanks to disuse, reaches Sam's ears.
"Who the hell is Bucky?"

Both are interrupted by the gun Natasha shoots at, and Sam is shocked to see her bleed.

But when he sees the Winter Soldier raise his gun to shoot at still frozen Steve, he forces his body to act.

He jumps up, the wings uncurling from behind him, flies forward, bends his knees to his chest and kicks out. The same time they collide with the body in front of him, he flinches because the scars on his back from the wings once again act up.

He winces as he sees the 'Shield agents' turn up and swallows, knowing they can't get out of this one.

In all of that, they all lose sight of the Winter Soldier, but Sam is too worried about Natasha and Steve right now.
Nat is in physical pain, while Steve seems to be in shook.

"It can't be him." Nat sighs, blood dripping down her shoulder.
"He has to be, what now, over ninety?"

"Zola." Steve grits out, plain and simple.
"He experimented on him in Azzano. He must have survived the fall somehow." Steve shakes his head, and only then does Sam realize he is shaking.
His soulmate is scared again.
He'd love to comfort them.

But right now, he can't.

He thinks of Steve's war buddy and subconsciously smiles.

The Winter Soldier, the metal arm guy, has a name.

And it's Bucky.
