Anger and hurt gets thrown at Sam through the bond and he staggers on his own two feet as Bucky levels him with a glare.
"You knew! You fucking knew we were and kept quiet!"
"I know! But it wasn't like you acted as if having a soulmate is the biggest shit in the universe!" He yells right back, and Bucky's brows rise to his hairline.
"It's not that! I just, it's..." He trails off and out of nowhere all anger is sucked out of him, replaced by sheer panic and selfhate, it's so strong, it threatens to send Sam on his ass.
Bucky steps back suddenly, his blue eyes wide and moist as he stares at Sam. Umgracefully, he almost slips and falls, but Sam is there, holding out a hand Bucky is goddamn refusing to come in contact with. So, he tries to avoid Sam by outstepping him. But Sam follows his every move.
And that makes Bucky panic.
He desperately tries to make an escape by pushing past Sam, but Sam is faster, for the first time ever and pushes Bucky back into a wall.
Bucky's heart is racing in his chest, and he shrinks in on himself, only to slide into a mess of limbs on the floor. Head drawn between his knees, he shakes and tries to force the bile down his throat again, to not throw up on his soulmates shoes.
His soulmate.
Sam.
Sam Wilson.
His most important person.
Bucky breaks down in tears.
"Not you... God, anyone but you!" He sobs, not seeing the heartbreak on Sam's face. Sam wants to crouch down, to comfort him, but he knows that would only damage a bit more. So, he opts for another approach.
"Buck, are you listening? I'll give you time to think about this, okay? We'll talk about this later, but we have to talk about it. Okay?"
The other can't respond really, since the tears and sobs shake his whole body, so he holds up a shaking metal thumb in the air.Good enough for Samuel now.
Because he knows Bucky is lying.
The next day, it's hard for both of them. Sam tries to approach Bucky all the fucking time, but whenever he does, a feeling close to overwhelming sweeps over Bucky like a tidal wave, so although he doesn't want to admit to it, he gives him space.
If that is a wise decision, nobody but time will tell, because he isn't sure, really.
The whole day passes without talking once to Bucky, as the guy makes it his life purpose to avoid Sam, he himself gets to think about their fragile situation.
It's gonna be difficult and hard, especially since both of them are PTSD-filled veterans, but Sam won't trade it for the world. He has to make sure Bucky stays with him, has to make sure he is safe and well now.
Once everyone goes to sleep, Sam can tell he won't do the same.
With his mind racing, Sam is sure sleep won't be nothing but an illusion tonight, so he goes and sits down in the table near the entrance. An hour passes, another does and the house is quiet, so quiet, Sam can't do anything to get distracted. The sun goes down further, clouding him in a coat made of shadows, but Sam is just there, thinking.
But at around 2 am again, twenty-four hours after Bucky finally realized they were soulmates, he hears some shuffling here, and some steps there, only for Bucky to emerge out of the living room, fully dressed and the duffel bag filled to the brink. He doesn't notice Sam, but Sam notices him.
Tears fill his eyes as he stares at Bucky's back.
Sam knew he'd run, but he would have loved to be proven wrong just this once.
He flicks on the light and Bucky jumps in the air for good five meters, before turning around to face Sam.
"You are so fucking predictable." He sighs, pinching his nose to hide his hurt.
"...why are You awake?"
Sam scoffs, it's a nasty and hard sound, a total opposite to what he normally is like and Bucky flinches.
"Because my soulmate would rather turn fugitive than be with me!" He whisper-yells and Bucky drops his head low.
"I'm not running awa-."
"Then what's in the bag?"
"..." Bucky doesn't answer, he doesn't have to, both know anyways. It just hurts to get the information right.
"Sit down. We're talking."
"No, I'm leaving, I have a plane to ca-"
"Sit. Down."
Silence stretches between the two, but neither refuse to break it yet. Sam can see Bucky eyeing the door with extreme interest, evaluating if he could go past Sam. The answer is yes, so Sam blurted out the first thing coming to his mind.
"Did you know I could legally force you to stay? If one can prove their soulmates are unstable, or in distress or not in their right mind and might do something irrational or violent, they can get approved as their soulmates guardian." He blurts out, and Bucky's eyes snap to his, away from the door.
Good
"Are you threatening me?!?"
Not good.
"No, I don't think this is necessary, as long as you get away from the door, sit down at the table and talk. Talk with me. Okay? I'd really hate to force you, but you obviously prefer running away." He snaps, crossing his arms over his chest to swallow down the intense need to grab the brunette and tie him up somewhere. Bucky meets his eyes for one second, but then he eyes the door again. So, Sam jumps in front of it and meets Bucky's eyes.
"Let's sit down and talk. You want milk with honey? Let's do that, okay?" He waits for Bucky to nod, before ushering the soldier into the kitchen, making the promised milk and heating it up in the microwave.
He, obviously not on purpose, left Bucky's completely packed duffle bag in the hall. But, of course, not so he can grab it once they talked, and lock it up in the closed shelf.
No, what are you guys implying even?
Bucky, tense as a board, sits as far away from Sam as possible and his gaze is on his apparently way too interesting shoes.
"Let's talk about why you want to run away, soulmate." Sam sneers, with a fake smile plastered on his face.
"No, let's talk about you threatening me with the law, soulmate!" Bucky shots back, with the perfect aim of one of the best snipers in the world.
Oh, boy, what a night this will be.
